I live near Old Mill Park and love the theater and the community it gathers together in this annual ritual. I hope we can move beyond the era of undermining activities that benefit the many for the sake of just a few.

I have performed with this company several years, and seen others. I have performed for decades in many indoor and outdoor locations. Curtain Theatre in Old Mill Park is very very special, magical in fact, due to a combination of human and Nature efforts. The often filled houses are almost always greatly entertained. I remind all that the Curtain adheres rather honestly to volume down at 8:30PM. And this is for a week of rehearsals. Most performances and the few rehearsals done there are on weekends and during the afternoon. The Theatre does much of it;s rehearsing or building not in the Park. If Curtain has to move elsewhere, it and the public loses the magic of the redwood grove that adds so much to the shows, AND costs of being elsewhere would have to be covered by great increase in endowment or box-office. Currently the ticket cost is free with important donations to somewhat compensate the company being very important. If the Curtain has to perform fewer shows, than the pitifully few 9 they do now, the amount of donation it could realistically get would definitely be too small. As it is, with full houses for the weeks they do now, barely makes a minimal stipend and some production costs. A lot of cost comes out of personal pockets, and the largess of Mill Valley and the Old Mill Park. And the benefits of free theatre results in greater access, wider variety of audiences, fuller houses (which seriously help make better shows), greater ongoing influence and uplift on generations and communities and artists.

I remember performing in the park and seeing the happy faces of audiences young and only, enjoying free, accessible art in their community.

The arts are important and valuable. The Curtain is a great venue that enhances the quality and style of life characteristic of the Bay Area.
Also, curmudgeons should not be able to deprive the public of free, high-quality performances of Shakespeare.

There's nothing like Shakespeare in the Park, especially in the beautiful Mill Park amongst the redwood trees. Please allow this great tradition of collaboration between the community, live theater, and nature to continue!

This is a beautiful, family-friendly theater that brings FREE Shakespeare and other plays to the people of Mill Valley and surrounding areas. The Curtain, and efforts like it, are what make Mill Valley so special. It would be a crime to lose this long-running tradition that brings art and beauty to Old Mill Park, because of the selfishness of a few.
