Our message and petition to the Glasgow City Council, from the members and friends of the Charlie Reid Centre We, the undersigned, while opposing the introduction of personalisation for mental health, believe that far from increasing choice it reduces choice and that this reduction in choice is most eminently demonstrated by the possible closure of the Charlie Reid Centre and the removal of its block grant by Glasgow City Council. Any possible closure effectively shuts down person centered therapy in Glasgow and the surrounding areas. A successful therapy and philosophy can ony be measured in effectiveness by its quality not by any meaningful quantity measurements or tick box exercise. The only way to measure this quality of service is to consult those who use the service. We strongly oppose the lack of consultation on this prominent health issue. The possible closure of the Charlie Reid Centre will all but destroy our community which daily acts as a barrier to suicide, re-hospitalisation, despair and loneliness. We feel that Glasgow City Council has not comprehensively considered the wider implications of any potential closure, and that any such action contradicts the principles that underpin the philosophy of the Community Care Act that brought about the birth of the Centre, Who better to ask what kind of service with a mental health problem really needs in relation to support, than the person with the mental health problem, ALL YOU NEEDED TO DO WAS ASK US !

Updates

September 18, 2013

I have officially filed a formal request for a meeting with Glasgow City Council representatives to discuss the lack of consultation regarding the block grant. We are currently documenting the specific gaps between the Community Care Act mandates and the current closure proposal to present to the health board.

September 18, 2013

The scale of this response is sufficient to force a formal review of the consultation process by the council. I have requested a meeting with the department head to present our objections to the current funding model.

I received a lot of help and advice and met great people at the Charlie Reid Centre.

It is not true to say that Charlie Reid is duplicating other services. The Missions are more focussed upon dependency than on mental illness. There are people using the Charlie Reid Centre for whom it is the only stable centre in their lives, where they can get support, and professional help If their mental health deteriorates. Flourish House caters for people who are at a higher level of functioning. How are people living on £75 per week supposed to effectively pay a tax of more than 33%? I am disgusted with Glasgow City Council.

The centre provides an essential part of care to someone very close to me, I am filled with dread at how this person will cope without the Centre.

my brother goes here and it keeps him out of hospital. taking this away is just cruel and short sighted. shame on the council for ignoring the people who actually use this place
