Why would anyone who appreciates history and culture and who understands preservation consider such a move? The fact that demolishing is still on the table indicates that the right people may not be sitting in decision making seats.. Are there any architects who are not tied to construction contractors on the decision committee? With a $30,000,000 pricetag well-trained people in the know should be at the table making decisions that show consideration for the history and character of Chautauqua. Glitz and attendtion getting decisions that lack consideration for quality and authenticity

There is a difference between renovation and rebuilding. There is not question the rear of the amp needs new restrooms, etc. It probably needs a new roof. But I think you will shoot your self in the foot for future fundraising if you ruin the center-piece of historical Chautauqua.

This performance venue has been a unique place for decades . Why replace it when it can be upgraded without losing the character that distinguishes it from every other summer venue ? This is a special place with a richer history than Marlboro , Tanglewood , wolftrap etc . Contact every person who has been on its stage and you will find that razing it to improve it will make it just on

What assurance do you have that the "new" amphitheater will be as resonant for music...one of the HIGHLIGHTS of the amphitheater programming as it is now. Check the success rate of such building projects as the stage of Carnegie Hall which was a disaster. There is NO guarantee that that acoustical miracle that we enjoy now will be replicated! The word DEMOLISH at this late date smacks of DECEPTION on the part the the administration of the Institution!

...and if one of our 'historic' WINTERS hits...foundations compromised?...job only partially "finished" for the following summer?...WHAT??? STAIRS instead of ramps for the aisles? Older folks wil more on stairs than the present ramps...Can anyone guarantee the new building will have equal - let alone betr - acoustics than the present structure.coustic
