I can't believe this is really happening. I've been on the Opera Staff for 21 years, enjoying the amp as one of our prime performance venues. And now this, without due process, really. and those trees! SO painful to see. And btw, where are we all performing in a few short winter-intervening months?

The trustees of the Chautauqua Institution have undertaken to create a virtual reproduction of the amphitheater. But, of course, a reproduction cannot be authentic. The current structure enjoys the Department of the Interior’s prestigious National Historic Landmark designation. To my knowledge, the NHL list does not include reproductions of existing historic structures. How will future generations judge the current plans if the Department of the Interior is forced to remove the amphitheater from the NHL list?

The amp shouldn't be destroyed, our grandparents to our generation has memories there. We watched many family members and friends graduate there from Jamestown High School. Why should this be another destroyed memory of history for Chautauqua?

If only the comments of the people who have come - and gone - before us could be gathered into this one petition; this is what the Board of Trustees needs to imagine before their next vote to demolish the Amp. For those who have passed, their only way to comment here is through the memories of those who knew them. I hope the Board respects the voices of those who cannot speak, respects the life that still exists in the Amp's structure, and makes the necessary enhancements that will allow it to continue to be the focus of Chautauqua's past, present and future. We see in today's young people a vibrant need to connect to the past through the physical reminders that still stand; I daresay that demolition and replication as far as the Amp is concerned is the exact opposite of what the so-called "millennials" are hoping to witness.

I've been going to Chautauqua every summer since I was ten years old. I've seen everyone from Ethel Merman to Ella Fitzgerald perform in the Amphitheater. You will never replicate the historical and glorious patina that makes this current structure glow.

The Board of Trustees should leave a lasting legacy of a historic treasure, not a remanufactured replica of what once was. This is one of those decisions that we will look back on and either commend or condemn the trustees for their leadership. I hope they make the choice to preserve history.
