I have fond memories of my class JHS of 1971 having our graduation ceremonies there. I believe that we need to stop being a throw away society. Everything new is not better, just new. We need to cherish and preserve works of art and history such as the Chautauqua Amphitheater.

We hope you have kept abreast the recent changes in the Amphitheater Project. As many of us have experienced, the Institution has encountered unexpected problems with rehabilitating this historic structure in the heart of Chautauqua’s Historic District. It will simply cost more and take longer than expected. As homeowners we know the frustrations of historic preservation. Many of us have experienced the same problems with our Chautauqua homes that are now occurring at the Amphitheater Rehabilitation site. We know the pain of reworking and reselling a planned renovation. We also know “if it is worth doing, it is doing right.” Therefore we urge the Amphitheater Rehabilitation team to revisit their work and come before the entire Chautauqua Community during the 2015 season. We think you will find us reasonable people with the best interests of Chautauqua Institution in our hearts

You have to be kidding.....almost like sinking Old Ironsides and replace with the modern day version.

It would seem inconceivable that guidelines for "preservation" of historic sites might permit their demolition!

With modern materials a new roof can be installed that will hold up longer than any past roofing. New rest rooms and performers needs can be added outside and connected by hidden tunnels. By using the lighter roofing a few columns may be removed. A few minor remodeling actions may be made to stage and musical section . Regardless the overall amp looks and feel can be maintained. Just takes some one that really wants to maintain our old amp. New board should be replaced with dedicated people who want chq as it should be . Not by those who see it as a profit maker for those out of towers.

Helped re-wire the amphitheatre in summer 1964. If you're going to build a replica, why even go there?

I can see doing improvements to the existing structure but to tear it down and build a new structure is beyond imagination I thought Chautauqua institution was about preserving history
