The beauty of the Amphitheater as it is lies in the fact that it breathes and radiates the very special history of those who have been there before us. There is a rare beauty and special reverence that will NEVER be replaced with a new building. It will be lost forever. Some things just cannot be recreated. The Amphitheater is one of those.

Some of my best memories are from Chautauqua Institution and the Ampitheater is central in those memories. The grounds will lose the heart of the community by demolishing it. Regardless of the way the plans evolved, the decision is a very bad one. "Upgrading" or changing it would strip it of its character completely. More appealing to young people shouldn't be a consideration as the young people who are interested in going to the concerts it holds will be fine with its structure. People interested in upgrades that modernize are the people who come to Chautauqua in the first place.

Our family owned the Glen Park Cafeteria and Hotel for nearly 50 years and we saw it's demolition and replacement with modern, yet "replica" style buildings - but they just do not have the same, historical visual feel that the original buildings had. I have not been coming to Chautauqua much over the years (too expensive for us), but when I have, I see that much of the historical "feel" that Chautauqua had, has been lost.

For ten years several friends and I rented a house at Chautauqua. Attending lectures and concerts in the amphitheater was one thing we all enjoyed. It was a special place that had a long history. We loved it. Lots of memories. Now it is to be torn down and replaced . Why exactly? Just to seat an additional few hundred people? Is that really so important?

I was shocked to read in WNY Heritage Magazine about the plans to demolish the historic treasure -- the Chautauqua Amplitheater. Being born and raised in Western New York, I was appalled that something like this would ever be considered. One of the greatest things about WNY is it's history and past. Once you destroy something like this, there is no getting it back. Please, please develop a new plan......one that does not include demolishing a local treasure.

My 10 year old Grandaughter who has attended theschool and the Girls Club since she was five said "I won't stepinto Chautauqua if they tear down the amphitheater."
