I have been coming to Chautauqua since 1962. It won't be the same now. I find it sad and ironic that Chautauqua, of all places, apparently doesn't value historic preservation.

A replica isn't the same thing. If it was, then why would Texans be spending more than $30 millionb to restore the Alamo, and not just razing it to build a replica? The statue of liberty and Wash. Monument both were restored in past few years--NOT torn down and rebuilt. Alas, the board has already made the decision, and it will impose that decision on the people who make up the Chattaqua community. L:eaders must lead--by understandong what is best for the people, not for their own interests.

The amphitheatre is the heart of Chautauqua. Destroying this particular edifice is sacrilege. Please restore the heart of this magnificent community.

The amphitheater is the space where so many important events happened for anyone who grew up in Western NY. It's a piece of our heritage that needs to be honored, not destroyed or replaced with something that has no history. We have so few historic spaces - this one is too important to destroy.

I sincerely hope that there is a way that this demolition can be stopped and the Amphitheater can be renovated. The trend of new equals better, which is marketed to line a few pockets, does a huge disservice to national treasures such as this.

The Amp is part of Chatauqua's history and indeed a historic treasure. Destroying the whole thing would be a disaster. Renovate, yes, Demolish NO!!

Of ALL places, Chautauqua should understand the importance of history, including preservation of 'sacred landmarks.' PLEASE don't throw away this gem.

What beautiful comments I have just read today. I think about the Larkin Administration headquarters in Buffalo, NY, which was demolished in 1950 and reduced to a parking lot and one piece of the old building. It is true that an approximation of the old Amp will be created at the current site, but I don't see how that really honors the old building in the way that preservation would, and Chautauqua has long been too expensive to attract significantly large new audiences, replicated Amp or not. For the sake of everything Chautauqua meant to me, up until the last 5 years or so, I hope I'm wrong. For now, I see Chautauqua as a very closed, expensive and close-minded enclave that is trying to remove as much of its Christian roots as possible, while marketing itself as something of the opposite.

When people work in secrecy, there is a reason. The Amp has actually been demolished in the past, but I find it hard to believe it could have been done with less respect for the people who would actually use it.
