Having closely cooperated with several excellent colleagues in Surrey's Politics Dept., I am appalled by this decision, that denies the high standard of the work of all the staff whom I know.

For a country whose deep tradition of political philosophy (Burke, J. S. Mill, J. Bentham, . Oakeshott) and a profusion of first-rate empirical and analaytical work to diminish or elimiate a poltiicsl department is unbelievable. The study of politics -- like the study of history, liberature, science -- is key to a liberal and humanistic education -- and one that is key to professional work is unbelievabale. Alas! pondering such academic bureaucratis, what would John Henry Cardinal Newman have said. That's easy: he would say these functionaaries have no concept of an idea of a university. For shame.

This kind of knee-jerk managerial reaction is no solution and can only harm higher education in the long run.

widen participation, dont shrink university departments because they meet the interests of university entrepreneurs. Time to remember why universities are important!

This is an incredibly short-sighted decision from which it will be very difficult for Surrey to come back. Now is the time to invest in teaching and research staff.

You can't just scrap a whole department without any consultation of the staff and students it affects. If nothing else it's downright disrespectful. In a university that prides itself on student satisfaction, this is despicable.

A bizarre decision to threaten such a strong department.
