The shutdown of the politics department is incredibly short-sighted and destructive. The administration should be ashamed of itself and reverse this policy immediately.

Shocking that this is being proposed. The Politics Dept has been growing from strength to strength and to cut it's development short would be an atrocity upon all graduates, students and staff who chesrish and rely upon it..

As someone who has a first degree in Politics I am appalled by this attack on a successful Department.

Given the clear quality of this department and its faculty, this decision is simply mind-boggling.

The decision to close the department is precipitant and of the kind that University's typically regret. Since the subject is buoyant I'd be surprised if student numbers and finances were not healthy. So the reason must lie in a poor showing in the REF. However, not only was this unexpected but also reasonably easily fixed in a low cost field such as Politics, for which all that is necessary is to hire some new people. Many Politics departments have successfully renewed themselves in the course of an assessment cycle without any such drastic measures being necessary.

If your idea about a person, instution, department, etc is lower than your expectations , you should bring up improvement suggestions and motivate them but not closing down them by a whim like a third world country highhanded university management. Please consider how you're going to effect lives of students who will encounter this unjust treat at the very early stage of their lives.
