Impacted by cut

There can be no quality teaching at a university without quality research. The NSS league table is even more problematic than the REF process. The NSS turns pedagogy into a popularity contest, thus lacking the rigor required in higher education.

To hamstring the university's research and tuition abilities in an area of such long-term importance is not a valid 'cost restructuring' exercise. It is, quite simply, a deliberate and dangerous myopia.

Future student recruitment to Politics at Surrey will fail because of petitions like this. The impact will be to damage the value of the current students' degrees, Marie. This is because the Department of Politics at Surrey will be diminished even more than what has been put forward in the university plans. And this will devalue degrees held by Politics graduates.

A petition like this does even more damage to the Department of Politics at Surrey. What student is going to apply to join this department now?

I know a great deal of research that comes out of Surrey's Politics Department that I use regularly. I am happy to support them in facing this injustice and unprofessional approach by the university management.,

Politics and IR is a thriving discipline in the UK and the recent round of REF validated this. It comes as a shock to hear that the management at Surrey has decided to take measures that will destroy the Politics Department there. This should have been a time for consolidation and growth and not an effective closure. Without research active staff, good teaching cannot be delivered and students' degrees will not be worth the fees they pay. I write this not only as the Head of a Department of Politics and IR in the country, but as a colleague who knows Surrey Politics closely because of experience as an external examiner as well as a speaker at a conference. The VC should rethink the decision now and not go on to regret it later. Our solidarity is with you. Dr Dibyesh Anand, Head of Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Westminster.

The politics department is crucial to not only the research a university conducts but to the breadth of courses it is able to offer which ultimately draws students in! Understandably cuts need to be made but closing the politics department would not be a cut, on the contray it would be fundamentally detrimental to the lives of all those students who currently study courses within the department! The notion to shut this department is ultimately ridiculous!

RESTRUCTION means destruction by means of restructuring. Academics are resisting, University managers are destroying, students are paying (on a government back up of all this corruption). Politics you say?
