This is a really important cause, and fits into the national context of neoliberalisation of HE and attacks on the humanities.

I greatly concur with the intent of this petition. The REF, in my opinon, is causing appreciable and potential long term damange to the Biritish university system. While not negating the importance of reserach in the realm of academic, the main reason that universities for the advanced education of students. Students,. especially undergrate students, paying 9K GBP a year, are the "bread and butter" of any university. Student want good lecturers!!! And it is time that the commodication of education be eliminated.

It's always a travesty to close academic departments, and can lead to unintended consequences (e.g the science department closures in the noughties)

Students are paying customers. We purchased a service: a 4 year degree. We were sold on Surrey for Politics in 2011 because of their excellent student satisfaction and tutor-tutee ratios. This restructuring takes the latter away and is equivalent to false advertising. If you want to restructure then do it incrementally so that current students, who were marketed to / recruited by the University in good faith, are not left short-changed.

Agree with you about the NSS Survey; is the Lecture 'cool', or generous with their marking, or lenient with you over poor attendance?
Even if good research is necessary for good teaching, too many university managers now seem to focus solely and exclusively on research and 'grant capture', and many academics now feel compelled to skimp on their teaching in order to publish more boks/articles or apply for grants.
Look at any academic vacancy advertise in the Tuesday Education Guadian or Friday's THE, and the criteria are always a long list of internationally-recogised publications and a successful record of obtaining research grants - no mention will be made of teaching ability!
These are also the criteria for promotion in most universities: how much have you published and how much grant money have you brought in - not how good are you as a teacher?
The REF has become the tail wagging the dog!

Future student recruitment to Politics at Surrey will fail because of petitions like this. The impact will be to damage the value of the current students' degrees, Marie. This is because the Department of Politics at Surrey will be diminished even more than what has been put forward in the university plans. And this will devalue degrees held by Politics graduates.

Surry Politics has an excellent reputation; it needs to be intellilgently and courageously sustained.
