Why on earth would you want to change Sunset High’s name?
Sunset, the place where I learned how to be loving and compassionate to myself, which means I not only survived but also learned to thrive. I wanted to be as happy as my other friends during HS, but this was the not path from my adolescent brain. Like Steven King said, "I don't understand people who like high school, "this was me and many others who attended Sunset. What do you do with a kid that tried but refused to take any medication, who needed an alternative school to finish his high school degree? Not all of the kids graduated and found their way, but most of us did, Sunset's ethos was about saving lives and building resilient kids.
Sunset was special in a way that only people could see from the inside, and maybe a few from the outside. The school provided me a loving environment, at a time when I didn’t think that existed in the world. Please tell me how many teachers take their free time to visit their students at a hospital or outside of school? I’m still here today because of the help, love, compassion, and lessons I learned. Sunset employees showed me love and care, which has allowed me to enjoy the simultaneous frustration and pure bliss of parenthood. Frustration, from managing the similarities that my son and I have, and pure bliss when I see him flourish and reach out for comfort and love. Yes, I might have lived through high school without Sunset, but it certainly helped with all of my future challenges and where I am today. For those of us who made it through what might have been more challenging adolescence than most, whatever that story or reasons were, Sunset is not a name that carries shame-- it's something that I'm proud of...

This school is iconic and should be not be “re-branded”. It’s a fabulous school just the way it is. A new name isn’t going to make it any better!

I graduated from Sunset High 1984. I helped create the first yearbook, sold world finest chocolate to secure a senior class trip to Knott's Berry Farm. Keep the name.

Sunset is the best school ever. It saved my life, my high school career, boosted my confidence and I made lifelong friends. It’s also made me a better parent understanding that people learn in different ways. Sunset is perfect just the way it is and so are we.

I taught at Sunset for 11 years after 25 years in a regular classroom. It was a wonderful experience for me and my students and parents I dealt with. Our principal, Dr Risner, the teachers, and the staff all supported each other to help students have success at school and in the rest of their lives.

Keep the name SUNSET, I went here and the staff were very supportive. The incredible teachers and staff helped turn my friends and I get our lives turned around in the right direction!
