Sunset high school made me feel at home. The teachers there actually cared about students who didn’t fit the regular school role. The name sunset high school actually carries a great stigma within the community. It’s teachers from other schools that are the issue. Also the schooling system that tries to judge every one in the same manner... If you try to judge a fish by the way that it climbs a tree, it’s going to feel inferior it’s whole life.... Sunset high school shows children that everyone has a special ability, and the counselors/ teachers there encourage children to find what that ability is all while teach them how to utilize it to the best of there ability.

Do not change the name. It is a great asset for students who can't stay in traditional schools.

I live in Encinitas but I work at a Continuation High School in Vista. My students say that our school is more like a family than a school and it is a home. Many students return to visit their “family”. The name of the school means a lot and brings comfort to those that attended there. I’m sure Sunset is the same. No need to change the name!

I have lived in the neighborhood of Sunset School since ‘82. My son went to it and it was a great experience for him! Please keep the name!

Without Sunset I would not have graduated but ended up with a 3.5 GPA after failing at traditional high school. It was a positive experience and I finished 1 year early!

Sunset is a pretty name and appropriate for the location. No need to "rebrand" it in shame.

Carlsbad rebranded LaPalma into Carlsbad Village Academy. As the kids would tell you... "EPIC FAIL" I totally agree. What could possibly be a better image than a Sunset?

I went there as well as my two kids. I don’t feel that there is anything negative associated with the name. This school has helped so many!

Sunset has been a staple in the community for years, 3 generations of my family attened the school and I believe it would be a disgrace to change the name.

Re-branding is overused and ineffective. Overcome stigma through your commitment and accomplishments.

I graduated in 2011. I had a teacher at LCC once tell me they thought the name Sunset was depressing. Often, the kids that went there did so because of behavioral problems. It often felt like schools like LCC and SDA pawned them off on Sunset in a "not in my backyard" fashion. When my teacher said the name was kind of depressing, it was more of an acknowledgement of how a lot of people viewed these kids - dead ends, your time is over. But surprisingly, the kids I knew with behavioral problems that remained at LCC, when compared to the Sunset students, have been far less successful. I remember the deeply negative stereotype, but maybe we were holding on to the wrong symbolism with the name. Instead of it being over for these kids, it was often the mark of a new a brighter day full of new opportunities to come. Silly waste of time and money to change the name.

I went to Sunset High School and it completely changed my life. Before attending, I was a very lost and distraught teenager, on the brink of dropping out of school. Sunset was the introduction to learning in a way I had not been exposed to before. Resources should be used to educate members of the community who believe Sunset is anything less than an extraordinary opportunity for young adults who struggle day-to-day in a traditional high school setting. Sunset saves lives and this school deserves to stand proud with it's original name.
