Please don't change the name of Sunset High School. While change is often good, even necessary, Sunset High is a positive part of our community, and changing the name of this school is completely unnecessary.

Transfer this principal. The school is only as good as the leader and with this move of his, I doubt his abilities. Who hired him?

At first I was against my daughter going to Sunset, but she definitely didn’t fit in at La Costa Canyon. However, it turned out that Sunset completely turned her around. She went to Palomar College, where she was co-captain of the tennis team, but her real passion was styling hair. On Nov. 1, she will be opening her very own 6-chair hair salon, and I couldn’t be prouder of her. So, yes, I thank God for Sunset! If anything, it should be expanded and maybe add some trade-school classes.

Who cares if Sunset has a “bad reputation”? It also has a “badass reputation” and when I actually describe it to people they are amazed! Me and my Sunset alumni friends only praise Sunset...never bash it. This school is so precious to me. Please keep the name.

I graduated in 1977 from San Dieguito & several of my friends attended Sunset as an uplifting alternative to traditional high school. Sunset is an Encinitas legacy, especially for the young lives it has nurtured and saved. Let Sunset graduates have a place to call their alma mater. San Dieguito graduates will always have an alma mater to return to. No name changes!

Respect and responsibility is the motto of Sunset. The proposal to change the name does not show respect for the history and the foundation of Sunset HS.

I’ve attended several Sunset graduations, participated in the group facilitator training program, and worked as an addiction focused LMFT with several sunset families over my twenty year career in providing therapeutic care. I also provide an annual academic scholarship to students who overcome adverse circumstances and graduate high school. It is named after a Sunset graduate. If not for sunset, she would not have completed high school despite her strong efforts to overcome her unfortunate life circumstances. I own a counseling agency in Encinitas and adamantly opposed to this. Sunset has a positive legacy for this community. If you want to change something, get back to putting students first the Doc Risner did. “Rebranding” is for corporate America, not for a school that has had such a positive impact on the lives of so many kids.

When I watch the sunset, I reflect. I take in the beauty, thinking about the day just ended, as well as the opportunity in the day to come. This is what Sunset High School represented for me. I attended University of San Diego High School (now Cathedral), San Dieguito High School (now SDA) and Sunset. Sunset was by far the best school for me, and I jump at the opportunity to say so when given the chance. Please keep the name.
