One can't change a legacy by changing its name. You lose the history. You erase it. Names are a way to honor. Such action will dishonor generations of personal histories.

I don't feel that there are any negative stereotypes/stigma associated with Sunset High School. And even if there are, then changing the name of the school will not fix that. Focus on what's important. If you believe that re-naming something will make it better, then the Padres should have changed their team name decades ago.

This school saved my life. The teachers at this school are so caring, loving and personable. They truly care about you and your well-being. I had such a special bond with all the teachers there especially my advisor she still has a special place in my heart and always will. This school is a special place and kids get so much more one on one attention then they would at a big public school. This school needs to stick around it’s a part of Encinitas... like Encinitas wouldn’t be Encinitas without Sunset!

Sunset...:an icon in our community for all students-acceleration, individual mastery of difficult subjects....the school is on fire with love, compassion, that enhances self esteem and self love. When one examines the body, staff, former leaders of SUNSET-they are inundated with a family atmosphere of love, support, honesty, and inspiration. Sunset is a model of what every high school should inspire-we care about you, we will help u achieve, go for the stars! Many students have flourished from this inclusion of love and I highly admire Doc Reisner, Don Rizzi, and staff for their incredible guidance and love that all students have experienced. The sun sets to the west of legendary SUNSET-The awesome beauty of the setting sun is symbolic of the beauty and mystery of life itself. In this SUNSET represents the magic of life and continuance of love. It speaks for itself. I have never in my 42 years of teaching heard any student say anything negative about SUNSET. Why would we ever change a name that is symbolic of beauty and magical in the way that every student is compelled to find the cyclical nature that highlight the dreams, hopes, resilience that every student needs. Go SUNSET!

I’m an alumni and I fully support keeping the name. There is nothing wrong with me or my choice of education and for many folks this is not only a great option but the ONLY option. The negative stereotype for alternative schools will always be there when racist, classist, and bigoted people hold the power. Don’t cave in to this bullying, there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Both my parents attended high school at Sunset and it is safe to say my dad would not have graduated without the supportive staff and teachers there. My brother, cousins and I attended Sunset. I graduated early and finished over 20 classes in one year. The programs, teachers, and overall tight-knit environment is exactly what your students need. I understand re-branding will not take that away from the school, but the name itself is so special to the generations of kids who attended. SUNSET High school is pillar in the Encinitas Community. Instead of re-branding consider hosting an informational back to school event open to the community to learn about all the amazing things Sunset has to offer. You, Mr. Ayala and all the Sunset staff, are the ones who taught so many of us to embrace our differences, stand tall and be proud of your roots. The name SUNSET is part of my story.
