To whom it may concern:
I was appalled to hear that the Sunnidale DOLRA will be closing for one year in mid-July, with no alternatives being offered in the area.
I have been walking my dogs in the Sunnidale DOLRA since it opened, and it is a fantastic place to allow dogs freedom to play and to socialize with other dogs. In fact, a group of us meet there informally every weekday between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. to walk our dogs and have been doing so for many years.
I have two main points to make about the closure. First of all, there is no reason why the Sunnidale DOLRA cannot remain open during construction of the proposed bridges. With appropriate signage to inform DOLRA users, alternate routes to get into the DOLRA could be used. It is unconscionable for the City of Barrie to close this DOLRA for a year, depriving Barrie residents of a place to safely exercise and socialize their dogs. There is no comparable place for dog owners to go – the south Barrie DOLRA does not offer the same benefits of secure fencing and wooded trails and ease of access from north and central Barrie.
Second, I disagree with the need for regeneration. Over the many years I have been using the dog park, the sumacs have grown up thickly, along with many raspberry bushes between the existing orchard trees and lilac bushes. In fact, in many places the trail inside the Sunnidale DOLRA is overgrown, and the path down to the DOLRA from the parking lot near Canadian Tire is now shady with almost a canopy of trees across it. The only place where the soil erosion is noticeable is inside the north gate to the DOLRA, and apart from some mud during the spring (and this spring was exceptionally wet), which is to be expected, the trail is accessible.

I use this park every day! For a city this size there should be an alternative enclosed walking trail for people before this park is closed.
This is insane!! Sign and keep it Open!
