As a daughter of a great and very hard working man who has been employed for 37 years at ssi im signing this petition to help the fight and keep our steel works open. The steel works are the heart of teesside and its all many working families, including my own have known for generations. I really hope this helps. X

Save our steel works. My partner works there and he loves doing what he does. The North East already has the biggest unemployed area in the whole of the country, don't make it rise any higher.

The March of Hope
Shabbily dressed, they stood with quiet determination
Ahead lay the longest walk of their unremarkable lives
Two hundred strong, the fittest of the many
Attempting to bring notice to loss of livelihood with respect.
Shoe soles stuffed with cardboard, covering darned socks of multi-coloured hues.
Cheers of support mixed with love and warm blessings
As they began the journey down to the deepest South.
They hummed, occasionally sang as the miles drudged away,
Willpower lending strength to legs of leaden weight
In the many small villages they were greeted as heroes
Towns also offering food, drink and strong, silent support.
Tokens stuffed into patched pockets, a twist of tobacco,
A sliver of soap, a threadbare flannel for their evening bath.
Jobs were needed, demanded and expected
Yet their abandonment was almost ignored by most
Yet again, the country was cleft in two.
Almost unnoticed, the raggle-taggle line grew longer
Their ranks swollen with sufferers from previous protests
Long dead, gone, yet never forgotten. Shades lending conviction
To the justice of their cause.
‘They look like scarecrows’ one observer commented, ‘More like
Skeletons’ another watcher declared, hastily hushed by those who recognised the unpalatable truth.
Once needed, relied upon, now cast down in decline with the
Empty Shipyards and silenced Industries.
The backbone of the Country, skilled workers who had brought fortune
And world fame to the Nation, hands forever engrained from honest toil

This industry is critical to the North East and the UK. A 'Northern Powerhouse' without the capacity to truly create wealth through hard work and endeavour, in a region rich in both, is simply a vacuous phrase.
