The closure of the steel works will have a devastating impact on employees, their families and our communities, compounding problems in an area which already has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. This needs to be reconsidered as a matter of urgency.

I feel strongly that SSI should not close or have any suspensions imposed for many reasons.
1. The devastating consequences for all the thousands of workers. Think of the people - these people have worked for years to build and provide steel for and on behalf of SSI. These men and women have families - mouths to feed and little people to keep warm. It's simply not fair.
2. The devastating knock-on affects for other businesses. Many thousands of companies rely on SSI being in Teesside. Ships rely on having the importation of steel works and tools/materials being shipped in to the UK on a regular basis. Shipping agentswill lose the work, delivery companies will lose the work and suspending any form of work will in turn affect all these other people trying to make a living in Teesside.
3. The devastating affect it will have on Teesside's economy. Overall, Teesside is being run into the ground. I moved here 3 years ago and have already seen a massive difference in those 3 years - local businesses are shutting down, people are losing their jobs, redundancies, pay cuts, homelessness rising, unemployment rising, youth unemployment rising, the queue I pass every day outside the job centre in Boro getting longer and longer. Shutting SSI is going to have devastating affecd on all of the above and it really is not what Teesside needs. In order for Teesside to thrive, work needs to be done to keep big businesses like SSI running.

The steelworks are a fundamental part of Teesside. These people who have worked for so many years of their life need our government now.
