I was blessed to have owned a home and property up Squaw Creek for 7 years. There is a lovely community of people who are minding there business helping the community and just trying to enjoy the lands they have proudly developed that they call home. This person has no right to come up our Valley and think because she is offended she can change the name of Squaw creek which at one time was a small mining town. Why don't you go back to the other side or wherever you came from. You offend me!

Squaw is not derogatory. It is not racist. It is an Algonquin Indian term that means "woman." There is no prejudice in the term as some people would believe. It is no different than calling a woman, well, woman in english. Only people who "want" to find offense in things will be offended, and those who do not look for offensive things are people with a meaningful life.

I believe Squaw Creek should remain "Squaw Creek" to the local history and the community to pass down to the generations to come!

Squaws did all the work and held the families together in a tribe. Just because white people used the title in a derogatory manner is no reason to change. The name is a history lesson in the making when a child asks why the road has that name. Keep Squaw Creek!

Why is Joanna really looking to change the name "Squaw Creek"?
Is it really to preserve the history and culture of the Pacific Northwest region?
Why start with Squaw Creek?
Wouldn't a more historically prominent area be of greater impact to draw the public's attention to preserving the history and culture of the Pacific Northwest region?
Does she want to change just the name of the creek, the road, or the ridge? Or all 3? (They are separate entities.) Would all be renamed, Swaram Creek?
Will she be submitting an application to rename other creeks/roads such as Black Canyon, French Creek, Gold Creek, Pete Creek etc. Will they be next?
Are there private property owners on Squaw Creek?
Did Joanna talk with them?
If so what are their thoughts/ feelings about the proposed changes?
If not, why not?
Who pays for all of this?
Isn't it true that changes in the names of roads, creeks, ridges etc. not only create confusion for the Post Offices, local government, utility, law enforcement, fire and the public but also deprive people a sense of history.
When and where is this political correctness-mania going to end? Will changing the name on a sign, on a map really change what the local community calls Squaw Creek?
The name "Squaw Creek" is not just the name of a road, a creek or a ridge. It’s a bit like your own name. Its part of your identity and one gets attached to it. Therefore, when it 's needlessly and abruptly changed it can and is gut wrenching.
Squaw Creek should remain "Squaw Creek" to the local history and the community for many lifetimes to come.

Leave it alone. There is nothing wrong with it. If outsiders move here and are offended by a road sign naming a road, the can move back to where they came from!
