Keep South Meck as is and keep Sharon/OP students in Myers Park. After the past year and all the chaos with COVID, this seems like the absolute worst time to make a change so impactful.

South has for years been THE example of how a successful language program should be, so the board’s solution is to dismantle one of it’s crown jewels and put it somewhere else? The ineptitude of this current school board is really starting to show to the point of no longer being able to hide it. Focus on solving the numerous and more pressing issues these young people have instead of asinine nonsense. Maybe try EDUCATING the kids!! It’s not that hard.

The World Languages Magnet program at South Meck has gone from 13 to 20 teachers in just the past 5 years, adding each year a new component to the program such as: Civilization and Culture I & II, Latin American studies in both English and Spanish, Honors Leadership VII. This is the only program in NC that offers up to level VI and VII for different languages. This year alone the program is adding a new Chinese teacher, a new Japanese teacher and American Sign Language class. Next year the program will be going from 750 students to 950. As per the director of NC State University International International Dual Degree program South Meck’s Magnet is the main feeder of their program. Why would you like to move such an amazing and successful program somewhere else? It’s like cutting a tree from its roots and replacing it with a baby stem.

South Meck has put so much into the language program and its success is due to Dr. Furr and Mr. Starnes. Do not dismantle their work (and this is EXACTLY what you would be doing by moving a program whose participants are happy and do NOT want it moved)!
Save the magnet program !!!
Why change something that works?????
pls don’t me go to south
