Hands on learning is best. Please keep the area alone for our children and grandchildren to appreciate.

I used to take my older grandsons to Shipley Nature Center and we loved going on the trails, seeing tadpoles and bunnies and squirrels. They loved making the animal tracks in the sand and identifying each one. My youngest grandson is just now getting old enough to enjoy it (3 1/2) and I want to be able to share it with him as well. His parents can take him to D-land, but this is what I do with the kids :)

I was involved in the renovation of the center in 2003. LSA Associates provided a master plan for the interpretive center, and I used the California State Education Standards for elementary school children in developing the exhibits and timeline of prehistoric to Native American to Spanish Mission era to farm Era to history of Shipley Nature Center. I renovated the mammal fur board with names of the species and photos under the furs. I obtained the puppets, which were donated by Folkmanis. I obtained the loan of the fossil ancient bison skull, purchased the replica Sabre-toothed cat skull, and had my cousin build custom cases for them with storage underneath. I supervised my Orange County Conservation Corps team as they refinished the wooden display cabinets, and cut the (non-native) tree for the diorama. The carpet was installed over the corroded and cracked concrete floor, which resulted in a cleaner and quieter environment. The current board, with no notice to the membership that I am aware of, has decided to strip that room down to the concrete and replace everything in the room with the same sterile cooky cutter plastic stuff you see everywhere else. This room was designed for small children and adults, and that is who uses it. Why go to the unecessary work and expense of replacing functional exhibits? It boggles the mind, and infuriates me.

Not everything for children has to be fast, bright, loud, electronic, computer-generated or chaotic. The Kids' Corner and story time is probably the most popular reason people go to Shipley. Spending money to hire some firm to figure out a re-design is ridiculous and wasteful. Leave this little gem alone and don't try to turn it into something it was never intended to be. If the folks running it aren't satisfied, perhaps it's time for them to move on and put it in the hands of people who care.

Take some of the money that is being wasted on other B.S. around town and spend it here. Something worthwhile for a change. Thanks.

Leave the sensory for kids and adults! Don't replace with plastic!

Update but DO NOT take away all of the real elements and sensory aspects for our children and adults. Plastic replicas and just seeing (under glass) DO NOT cut it. Both children and adults deserve this area! Please give our children the BEST. We appreciate this and so will future generations. Xx

Keep the Kids Corner! My child loved going in there and checking everything out. Heck, I was just there a couple of weeks ago and had fun exploring and showing my mom who was visiting.

These features educate and engage children. Our family often refers to the egg case as we identify the birds in our neighborhood. Real is better!

We love the Shipley Nature Center as is! The diorama is a favorite of my boys and being able to see real taxidermied animals rather than just pictures is important! I love the welcoming feel of the center interpretive center and I don't want that to change!
