Save Salem's Historic Brick Sidewalks!

I LOVE visiting Salem! It’s a wonderful city and the preserved environment is a large part of what makes it so lovely. I am 69 years old, ready to have a hip replacement, walk with a cane (the best I can!) and I visit my daughter frequently who lives in Salem. Last week’s visit was marred (actually scary) by my inability to walk on the uneven brick surfaces at night. I had to walk in the street to be safe. Please take care of your built environment so that those of us with mobility issues can still come and enjoy Salem!!!

Please restore Salem’s brick sidewalks! As a tourist that visits every year the brick sidewalks are a huge part of Salem’s charm to me. They definitely add beauty to the city. I can’t imagine the brick sidewalks not being there anymore.

Please save the old sidewalks

Brick sidewalks are such an integral part of the character of historic cities like Salem. In this time of severe housing shortages with out-of-control housing prices and rental costs, we are being bombarded with development projects geared toward addressing this housing problem with big-box-high-capacity-buildings with little character or sense of place, that are infilling vacant lots and replacing smaller more historic buildings. **One important course of action we can take to address this depletion of character in our City is: (1) to insist on retaining all of our current historic brick sidewalks, keeping them in good professional repair; and, (2) working to secure a permanent City capital expense budget for future brick sidewalk installations: and, (3) develop a specific 25-year-plan (to be instituted on Salem's 400th anniversary in 2026) that is targeted to areas of Salem that contain the most historic fabric, and thus provide the highest economic return from tourist and historian interest and visitation, and concurrent patronage to Salem area businesses.

The brick sidewalks are iconic and must be preserved.

The brick sidewalks were one of the major things that added to the ambiance of the town! Save the sidewalk!

We are in desperate need for everyone’s safety to get these historical bricks fixe for once! My mother tripped over a brick that was loose and uneven. She was badly hurt on her knees and hands. Luckily she didn’t hit her head. Let’s get this in action asap!

I have never been to Salem but when I get my chance to finally visit I want to be able to walk on these brick roads. We have some in the town I live in and love that we still have some of that history of the town.

Fix the brick.

So disappointed to see the City of Salem replace brick sidewalks with cement along Derby St. They should all be maintained as needed by the city. Again, residents are ignored and their tax money wasted on changes we don't want. Sadly typical.

Please, save the brick!! One of the best things about Salem

I am a many time, all seasons traveler to Salem and it’s sidewalks add to the quaint New England charm of Salem. Please don’t change that.

I live in Salem. These should be maintained. I’ve almost broken my ankle multiple times on these bumpy sidewalks.
