Bonnie & I made the front page of the Salem Evening News - saving the brick sidewalk on Summer Street -- because Holyoke Mutual wanted concrete sidewalks! We need to take care of our heritage.

The brick sidewalks add charm to the city and reflects the history. It would be disappointing to that character . I also agree that the city does too much "patch" work that isn't maintained.

Agreed. Too many of our brick sidewalks are being replaced with concrete. Between the numerous building improvements and tour groups everywhere, the City needs to step up their game!

Historic preservation of this nature is essential to maintaining our ability to attract those who like to visit and live in beautiful places. Citizens, like myself would help facilitate the continuation of expanding our brick sidewalks and maintaining the ones already in existence.

Brick sidewalks may pose an inconvenience or hazard for some, but what doesn't? Let's keep character in our environment. Can we offer alternatives for those with physical challenges? Narrow the roads and create an 'accessible'lane.

Bricks are integral to Salem's historic character. - beautiful everywhere. Easily maintained (anyone can do it,, environmentally friendly, and lovely to see.

Brick sidewalks should be everywhere.
Cheapest to repair, and maintain, and keep ADA compliant.
Brick is safer: naturally draining and de-icing, and when laid properly, limited-mobility friendlier than concrete. Brick is far more environmentally friendly, from groundwater recharge, to production.
Brick has limited waste: there’s no ‘washing out’ of bricks when laid, no caustic salt, acid, and chemical run-off.
Bricks are reusable, and are used over and over again: some bricks laid in town have been around since the 1700’s.
One guy, with one truck and a shovel can repair, install, and modify any brick issue. Try that when the tree root pushes up a concrete slab, or cracks from frost heave -versus the water, men, jackhammers, trucks, setting time, and temperature needed for concrete repair or install.
