Developers have purchased Saint Augustine Church and School in South Boston at an astonishing low cost of 2.4 million. Despite this bargain basement price, they refuse to spend the money required to reinforce and renovate either structure. Their initial plan is to demolish both structures and replace them with buildings housing 80 units combined. They cannot say at present whether these units will be condos or rentals. The Saint Augustine Church and School buildings do not need to be, nor should they be, destroyed. There are many examples of historic buildings being successfully reused. The destruction of these architectural works of art are changing the face and fabric of the neighborhoods where these buildings were once the gathering places for people to celebrate and to grieve.
