As a current TYBA Literature student at Xavier's and a proud, proud member of Raga for every single year I've studied here, I can say that the department has and always will be my home, as it has been for writers, readers and creators of St. Xavier's since inception. Since 1983, Raga has embodied the spirit of Malhar, chronicling the fest and channeling its soul. Removing the department is only the first step towards a world where in which it will be a pleasure to burn. Raga is Malhar, and one day, Malhar will realize that it is Raga.

I was OC logs in 2007 and as such have been very close to the magic of Malhar. I homestly don't see the point in discontinuing a department that has played such an integral part in grooming students to pick up a pen and put their thoughts out there. Raga is a part of the rich heritage of Malhar and should be preserved and be allowed to flourish.

Raga gives students a space for the kind of open-ended creativity that nothing else in Xavier’s does. I repeat, nothing else in Xavier’s. Raga does something no one else can do—certainly not LA, which has a different soul and a different core expertise. I also find the reasons for this move highly unconvincing—any worry about costs would surely be better assauged by leveraging Raga’s potential to generate revenue rather than axing the department altogether. Please reconsider this.

As others before me have written, Raga was my very first opportunity to have my writing critically evaluated by my peers and vice versa, and be involved in a publication from start to end. Today, I am a postdoctoral researcher, and my academic career depends on writing articles and grant applications that are peer-reviewed. Raga represented an area of education for me that would otherwise have been lacking from my undergraduate experience at St. Xavier’s. Please reconsider the long-term implications of cutting down the voice and creative soul of Malhar.

Dear Sirs and Maams,
On one hand I Understand from a macro perspective that this clubbing of departments is a perceived cost betterment. However, that reduction in budgets is a small spec in the gigantic hole we'll end up creating by this consolidation. Raga and LA require slightly different focuses, and that separation in effort and labour is critical to the literary foundation of this first 'real world' experience for all your students pursuing and honing their literary skills. To merge the departments is to curb the departments from their exclusive focuses, critical at that stage for every budding literary entrepreneur of the future. This Undermining of both departments to save printing a few t shirts that are offset by marketing costs anyway is to go backwards in my humble opinion, and I'm certain that is not the vision behind this attempted restructure. Please consider these opinions from your alumni that have had ground level hands on understanding of the way your prized festival works, and even from a macro leadership standpoint, Raga is the voice for Malhar. We don't want to emulate our friends in the government by curbing that mouthpiece do we? :) I humbly request the staff and management that we not dilute it's value, and instead appreciate the cogs that come together for four months to benefit the college in ways we are acquainted with.
