Music education is very important, especially to the students involved. To take that away could take away opportunities in these young people's lives.

I didn't have much of a musical talent but it was obvious when I was there that there musical programs were lacking. If they only have one teacher teaching two different classes students are going to fail and not because it's the students fault but cause the school would rather cut their artistic program than cut back some of their oversized admin and office positions. They always look for money in all the wrong place which hurts the students. What used to be a great school is going down the dump do to the fact that it will only have the bare minimum required by the state.

I can't believe this is even in question. I find it very disheartening that the district I have choose over others would consider getting rid of any type of program that allows children to excel in creativity.

Music at WPHS was my life. By my senior year, I decided I wanted to go to college and become a professional musician. At WPHS, I would wake up at 6 to make it to 0 hour jazz band, go to four music classes in the day time, spend advisories and any other downtime in the practice rooms, then go to marching band or pep band or musical rehearsals, or lessons.. most of these activities were largely student ran. There was one music teacher with actual musical training, and she specialized in chorale music and conducting. Her guidance was useful for the theory knowledge I needed, and the conducting knowledge I was passionate about. But she was stretched too thin trying to not only take care of her choir kids, but also try to keep the band kids from completely lacking the knowledge we would need. She and the "band director" (that didn't have a music education background, or directing background at all) were not equipped to help me improve on my instrument. Now, in college, I am significantly behind with my instrumental skills and knowledge and have to work extra hard to catch up to the others. If it weren't for my natural passion for music and my instrument, they wouldn't have even let me in to the school of music because they said my technical skills on the clarinet were lacking so much. WPHS cannot afford to have one music teacher trying to teach both band AND choir. It will kill not only the competency of the program, but the students in the program's chance to gain the knowledge that would be necessary to become musicians in the professional world. Which means having two QUALIFIED teachers; one choir, one band. Be creative! Reach out to the Woodland Park Wind Symphony and see if any of the people there will volunteer to teach sectionals about their instruments to the students.

Woodland Park has one of the best arts and music programs, better than their sports. Please help keep our high school's music program thriving!

I grew up in that school system and music was the most impactful piece of my school career, both vocal and instrumental. It takes a special kind of person to successfully manage both branches and it would be almost impossible without the experience and support within a solid program, let alone in a struggling one. Now is the chance to build up the program again and start in the right way with experience and passion from devoted individuals.
