I live in Staverton which is a rural area and if the ward was to close, the closest maternity wards are Burnie 1hr 15 mins away or Launie 1 1/2 hrs away. Thats just too far for an emergency and especially if an ambulance was to come and transport to either. My first birth ended up being an emergency as baby was in distress and in future i have to have ceasareans, so whats the possibility baby would arrive safely. And as we have those big tower powelines running through our property their is no chance for an evac either. I dont support this at all.

Anyone would be stupid to take the maternity ward away from Latrobe. Especially is when there is a lot of people getting pregnant, I know a fair few in devonport and imagine if they did take it away? It's an hour to Launceston and 40/45 minutes to Burnie. If an abulence is too late the baby will most likely born in the car or at home or wherever they are, or on the way to Burnie/Launceston. I think they would prefure to be in a hospital bed when giving birth.

I feel for the people on limited income who may find it difficult to travel to Burnie. Childbirth is such a joyous time and close friends and family may have difficulty making the journey if they live in the Devonport area.

There is no way I would want to travel over an hour to have my babies. I have had babies at both locations and prefer the Mersey

The general and immediate environment of the Mersey Hospital Maternity ward is far more relaxing and pleasing than that of the Regional Hospital. The reputation of the Maternity services at the Mersey hospital is one of excellence. The dedicated and highly qualified staff have served this area for very many years with Best Practise standards second to none. The unit is highly regarded throughout the community and by interdisciplinary health team members. It is illogical to shut down a pleasant and first rate maternity unit in favour of one which is in need of upgrading and which requires labouring women to travel unnecessary distances.

Latrobe and Devonport need this hospital. Long way to drive to Burnie when you are in labor

I live in devonport and I had my first child at mersey, they were great. I plan to have another child and I don't want to travel over half an hour to travel to burnie or to have to travel to all my midwives appointments etc.

The extra time it'll take for someone in labour to get to Burnie could be life threatening. Not to mention the jobs that will be lost where do they go it'll up root lives and families.

Keep the Mersey services intact. The people in Devonport and outlying areas should not be denied their own maternity services. You should not put mothers and babies at risk to balance the budget!

Burnie is always full now so how are they going to be if latrobe isn't there? And burnie too far for some people. No car or no petrol.

Many babies are delivered in Latrobe so we need a maternity hospital here. Whst about the dangers of a baby and mothers lives if she is in labor and something is wrong and wont make the trip to Burnie what happens then??
