The librarian/ technology specialists at all 3 schools my child attended in D-12 were irreplaceable guides and mentors and truly impacted her success as a student.

Yes, we need more technological literacy, but shouldn't basic literacy come first? Librarians helped me to pick out books which would excite me to read & I don't think a clerk can do that...

I agree with Talisman, our kids have access to technology at home. That being said, we do need to be teaching aspects of technology in the classrooms, but in a more coordinated approach. Right now, there are vast differences between classrooms, even in the same grades within the same schools. What the district needs is more coordination among the teachers and I.T. so that technology can be integrated into the classrooms naturally and systemically. The librarian should not be sacrificed for this goal, as they add tremendous value to the schools.Speaking as a software engineer, we also need to offer classes at the junior high and high school level to introduce programming logic. I see most kids entering college with a base knowledge of programming logic that they are able to get in high school, which puts our kids a little behind the curve in engineering.

Is this a financial consideration or a student consideration? Technology has fostered less excitement and eagerness to to learn and explore than that librarian devoted to the brighted child entering an elementary library.

Please pay attention to the differing needs of each district; our kids aren't lacking access to technology. Parents aren't asking the school to provide more technology training. We do value a librarian who reads and can speak with kids about what they are reading. I saw kids speak to our school librarian EVERY day about what they were reading, what character she loved, what to read next. It was like a mini-book club happening every day on an informal basis.

Technology is too often promoted as something that will automatically make our children smarter, more competitive, etc. I say, nonsense! Technology is no substitute for caring, competent people.

I would encourage the Board of Education in District 12 to rethink their consideration of this. Librarians are wonderful resources for all of us and should not be removed. Libraries cannot run themselves.
