It is clear that the Far North District Council has lost its moral compass. Thankfully the majority of the population still have theirs and are using them wisely.

Even SPCA, The organization mainly depend on donation, does provide exercise and bedding for dogs (E.g., Auckland SPCA have floor heating!) ,minimize the kill rates and try to promote dog to find home on their website or in many other way, why council which receive money for the shelter cannot do those minimum but necessary things for the animals? Where is the money gone? If someone cannot pay rates on time council charge the late fee etc and they ask dog owner to regester, but that council doesn't obey animal welfare law and over 7 long years already, that's unbelievable! If the shelter manager cannot properly follow the demand any more, have to find someone who can give animal proper care immidiately and shelter must open up to the public and let volunteer to come extra help and let everyone see clearly how sheltered animals are looking after and assessing etc. At the moment, everything is simply NOT OK and if council cannot do, they even have to give money to good animal rescue group! What a heartless council who have already seen and heard the problem from long time ago and hardly done anything for the poor voiceless animals until now.

I have dogs and this is a breach! Of animal rights on so many levels!! Hitler did not create the animal welfare for nothing! He did it for his beloved German shepherd.

The Council needs to be held accountable for the appalling treatment of dogs in it's 'care'.

I've heard some terrible rumours about the treatment of dogs at the pound in Kaitaia. Perhaps they are under funded. No excuse though. I believe education around animal welfare is needed in our schools. Especially around de-sexing.

I worked in an animal shelter for a long time and there is absolutely no reason for animals to be kept in appalling conditions...get with it FNDC and do something right for these fur babies...golden rule ANIMALS FIRST!!
Dogs deserve better!
