Over the past decades, salmon populations on the Columbia River have been drastically declining, in some areas decreasing by 50% in just a five year period. Previous attempts to save salmon have not been adequate, and have solely proved how crucial preserving the salmon is. A more impactful change must be made. That change is the implementation of Marine Protected Areas along the Columbia. These areas would heavily reduce, if not eliminate, unnecessary salmon killing in spawning and nearby spaces, allowing salmon some breathing room to recover from years of overfishing.
