The Claregate not only anchors the "Claregate" name to the local area and community, it also proves a much-needed function room — something not provided by any other local pub. It provides a restaurant and much-needed employment. Its loss would be a terrible blow to the area, reducing trade; employment and local identity.

this pub is an icon within the area. Large breweries would rather fill the shareholders pockets with cash and bonuses rather than do what they are supposed to be good at...selling beer and running pubs. Given the opportunity, the pub should be a free house without any ties to breweries so they can serve the whole community with good food and entertainment.

Marstons must be held to their promise to re-furbish The Claregate, rather than selling it off for someone to make a quick profit on a bunch of houses which will create more congestion on an already busy local route.

The Claregate is a lovely friendly and respectable pub. Marstons should be ashamed as it is, because they were supposed to use some of the cash from the new Tesco to give it a facelift and pocketed it instead. Now they want to tear it down? Ridiculous.
