As a pediatric speech pathologist I can see the great work these professionals employ in the outcome of the children I am able to treat. It is a shame when hospital administrations value their bottom line over the care of the patients that say they intend to serve.

Mid level providers are no where close to a substitute for these physicians with their level of education, training and experience. As a referring physician if this change is made it decreases my confidence and willingness to refer to the Children’s Mercy system for hospital level care.

This is absolutely unconscionable. What a despicable decision. You are playing with the lives of those children- all for a few bucks (which, by the way, we know aren’t truly being saved when using mid levels and early career physicians instead of experienced physicians). How the executives aren’t ashamed of themselves is beyond me. Do they even have souls? Blessings to the author of this petition. She has articulated the need for top level, experienced physicians, especially during such a critical time when life and death truly hang in the balance.

As the parent to a patient who spent 6 months between the PICU and 4 Sutherland, with future surgeries planned, I will consider taking my son elsewhere for his care if these physicians are no longer with the organization. They are a large part of why CMH is ranked in so many specialties; they are the backbone of the care provided by cardio, urology, neuro, etc during the post op and critical care phase of recovery. The choice to cut ties with AAKC will directly impact the outcomes of patients (top priority at a pediatric hospital, correct?), impact the family experience and trust in the PICU as a whole, devastate the families who have built relationships with these providers during the most vulnerable, emotional, and scary times of their lives, and completely alter the TEAM atmosphere and cohesion within the PICU (despite what I’m sure would be the best efforts of the remaining staff to pick up the pieces and continue to function during a potential transition, by no fault of their own). These providers, along side the RNs, CAs, RTs, surgeons, pharmacists, etc have a well oiled machine running the PICU 24/7; and taking these physicians away from this machine will have LIFE ALTERING consequences. Though Kansas City is a large city, it is equally “small” in the networks that exist. The ripple affect of this decision will be felt throughout the community, as well as the region for those smaller communities who rely on these experienced, skilled, and veteran physicians. The following names are just the ones I can remember who DIRECTLY impacted my son’s quality of life, and our family experience while inpatient at CMH:
