A petition to the Sonoma City Council which supports the preservation of the Broadway oak trees and provision of funds to maintain the sidewalks in which they are planted
The signatures on this petition are intended to demonstrate to Sonoma's City Council the high level of public support that exists to preserve the Red Oak trees which line both sides of Broadway between Napa Street and Patten Street. In addition, the signers of this petition ask the Sonoma City Council to undertake any sidewalk repairs which may be needed from time to time, and to make funds available through grants to the various property owners affected for the cost of any repairs.
The Broadway Oaks have been growing for 23 years, and represent a significant investment on the part of community. Their planning took over five years, and the funds for the planting project were provided in full by contributions. The preservation of the oaks will insure that our entry to the Historic Plaza remains a splendid, welcoming boulevard, one that provides shade to pedestrians, adds positive aesthetics to the widest street in the city, and helps improve the economic conditions for merchants on Broadway.
Twenty-three year old trees are hard to replace and takes a long time; concrete is easy to replace and takes only a matter of days. Both public safety as well as protecting and preserving these beautiful living trees can be fully satisfied, and the signers of this petition respectfully ask the City Council to listen to the community, respect the history and investment these trees represent and develop policies and plans which accomplish both aims.

I met with the city arborists this morning to discuss alternative repair methods for the sidewalks surrounding the Broadway oaks. We are currently drafting a formal proposal for the council that outlines how to prioritize root preservation while addressing safety concerns.

Take a moment and imagine the view down Broadway towards city hall, denuded of those lush trees. Oh wait! I don't have to imagine it, because I REMEMBER what it looked like prior to their planting--hot, dry, bare, sidewalks. Please fix the concrete and leave the trees in place.
Dear Sonoma City Council: These trees are part of the charm of Broadway into Sonoma and planted with community funds! Please put a little thought and effort into preserving the trees by replacing the sidewalks, a relatively easy fix. Save the trees!
As a former Broadway business owner, I can add my perspective to this preservation project. The trees contribute so much to the community. Let's take care of them as they mature. Thank you.
I'm a regular visitor to Sonoma. I'd be sad and sorry if these trees were to come down, and what really is the net benefit? As is, they dampen noise, provide color and shade, and absorb polluted air & co2. Tremendous benefits from the trees, tremendous loss if they are cut down. Think it through.
These trees are Sonoma's "receptionists" -- the impression of beauty and majesty one gets on first interaction with our lovely town. Keep the green living things and replace the concrete: shouldn't that always be our guiding principle?

I spent time in Sonoma in the 40's and 50's, and moved here in 1974. I've seen many changes to Sonoma over the years. Keep the Red Oaks! You cannot replace their natural beauty but more easily can use some ingenuity to fix the surrounding walkways.
