Soon there won't be ANY animals left to complain about as man is doing what he can to make sure of it! Maybe it would be better for the world if man was to become extinct while there are still some animals left. Remember God created the animals first. Surely He intended that they be allowed to survive!

These turkeys are getting in the way of humans, better mow them down now! (rolls eyes) I live where we have flocks of wild turkeys, you know what we do for these birds? We stay away from them, we as humans dont need to destroy all that enters our path or ventures near or the other way around.. S/N

First and foremost it seems less as though the turkeys are a threat and more like a complaint that someone didn't have enough turkey for thanksgiving. It should be known that turkeys hold a vital part in the ecosystem, especially in dealing with snakes. Now if I'm not mistaken with all the new construction work that has been happening as of late there have even been a call through out the community of a snake infestation. Who else could deal with these snakes cheaply and naturally than the turkeys of the Crescent? Unless the Crescent board WANTS to have to deal with visiting golfers getting bit on their courses (which is probably the only thing they truly care about). Save the turkeys keep the ecosystem in check and have less snakes around to bite our children, dogs, and visitors.

as a guest i was pleased to appreciate the flora and fauna at the crescent. now i hear there is a threat to exterminate the turkeys? Preposterous!!

We have the national headquarters of the NWtF in Edgefield,S.C., has anyone contacted them?they relocate tens of thousands of wild turkeys! DNR shouldn't be the only state agency involved here!

My husband has not been on the POA for over a year. This is a newer problem.
As far as turkeys go--the first 5 years I lived here I never saw a turkey. They began showing up in the Heritage section a few years ago, there is still a manageable group in that section. Last year it seems the population exploded in the Waterford section. I have had up to 58 turkeys in my backyard. There are aprox. 180-200 occupied homes in Waterford,. DNR count was over 100 turkeys in the section. No one minded when there were a small group. Belfair culls their deer when the population becomes too large--probably why we don't have extremely large herds of deer.
As far as I know the community and POA believed the turkeys were going to be sent to Dafuskie--but DNR decided the turkeys would invade homes there because they are used to being fed by humans.

While I don't view people feeding the turkeys as criminals, asking people to stop doing so might have been a middle of the road step. The security committee has a history of doing no investigation into complaints and reacting in the most severe manner possible. This is just the most recent example.

I am a Crescent resident and concerned on a number of levels. No one from either the security committee or the board asked me or anyone I know whether we wanted the turkeys gone or not. They did no investigation to determine if they were really a problem. Their first reaction was the drastic approach to remove and kill the turkeys. The security committee has a pattern of this behavior. They take a complaint and assume that the complainor's side of the issue is the only side. Unless, of course, they have a different view. They don't take any moderate steps, but go directly to the nuclear approach. I've been reading lately about the Russian revolution and it's apparent that the Czar and ruling class's policy of severe reactions to all issues contributed significantly to their downfall. Contrasting the Russian approach was the English aristrocracy which took a more moderate approach. The English approach allowed them to move gradually toward a democracy. We know what happend to the Russians.

This is absolutely disgusting. There is no reason for these animals to be euthanized. There are many people willing to share their land with these beautiful animals and its completely awful that they continue to be killed. Critter Management would be happy to help capture and relocate them. These animals made this their home long before we did. These are living creatures and they deserve to be here just like us. We can all coexist and be happy! Stop murdering these animals and have a heart!

After having read the article about no such thing as a true "wild Turkey" I wonder where did this person...persons come from? I'm 65 and for whomever it was we have always had the true strain of eastern wild turkeys living in the Savannah River swamp. Fact...SC has been the cash cow for the restocking because of the true strain...of eastern!

Health Department and Fish and Game Department state these facts on feeding of wild turkeys
* can spread disease and parasites
* should not be fed unless there is 15" of snow on the ground for more than 10 days
* should not be fed within 100 yards of an occupied dwelling
* should not be fed within 100 yards of a busy road
* human contact should be minimized as the birds become aggressive, fearless and can spread disease
* should not be anywhere near pets, as disease can endanger pets
*droppings should be removed due to spread of disease
* should only be fed in a controlled situation, build for feeding
*human feeding of any wild animal is not advised

SAVE THEM! Puye Cliff Dwellings was home to 1,500 Pueblo Indians who lived, farmed and hunted game there from the 900s to 1580 A.D. Turkeys ate ate harmful insects and fertilized their gardens. They lived with the tribe. The Cresent Turkeys trust their human neighbors and mean no harm. People can solve scare them away with a dog or cat.
