Remember community, the reason we have a pool is because of the 2 teenagers who drowned and the community said NO MORE! We are surrounded by water, drowning is one of the leading causes of death and in our community not one local child has drowned since swimming and water safety became a requirement. Parents, grandparents, please sign!

When we lived in Manzanita, both of my girls attended Nehalem Elementary school and we used the pool frequently. The pool is a great asset to a small community.

One of the only reasons I signed the new NCRD Tax was because of my assumption that my kids would be getting swimming weekly through the school year. This program is so important to our kids who need to be comfortable in and around bodies of water and I am hoping that the school will reevaluate their decision and keep the traditional program we, as a school have had in place for all these years.

Cutting the amount of lessons will be detrimental for our children. Not all parents can, willing, or able to put their children in extra lessons to keep up repetition to promote strong swimmers. Which I feel is extremely important in our area. Especially with our middle and high school directly across the street from the beach. Where our children are allowed and or sneak off campus for lunch.

I lifeguarded at the pool. I taught my wife to swim there. My kids and grandkids learned to swim there. And in turn our kids have saved some people who were struggling in the water. This is a unique opportunity to teach our students and gives them another great physical exercise that they will use the rest of their lives.

No one will ever know how many lives have been saved by having this weekly program. They learn water safety and respect for the water.

I came from Spokane Washington where swim lessons were free to kids. I went thru the entire Red Cross swim program by either walking to the pool from my grandmother's home or taking the bus from my home. Neither my grandmother nor mother drove. In my senior year in high school, I earned my WSI and my Senior lifesaving certification. This allowed me to lifeguard and teach swimming for 5 summers while attending college as well as working at the college pool. Every significant job I've had was in part because of my swimming experience and college degrees. My recreational pleasures have been swim-related, scuba diving, white water rafting, kayaking, and river swimming. When I injured my back swimming has been one of my ways of rehabilitating and maintaining my health. If it wasn't for the free swim program offered by the Spokane Parks department I would never have had the opportunities that have shaped my life. Spokane is surrounded by many lakes and the Spokane river runs thru the town. Even today they try to make swimming affordable for youth. I taught swimming at the Nehalem pool for 14 years. I have had past students come to me as adults to say thank you for teaching them to swim, as well as to tell me how swimming has affected their lives. It is a safety skill, a lifelong health-related skill, and an activity that builds self-confidence. That self-confidence transfers to academic areas in school. It would be a grave mistake to remove swimming from the school program.

Please save the swim program, it means so much to our kids. And also teaches them a life saving skill that’s much needed here on the coast.

I have loved the swim program as a teacher and parent. I understand that the state now requires x number of minutes of pe. Teachers also need loads of time to teach kids the basics as we recover from covid. With all that I think that swim lessons are pe. The pe teacher could be involved to validate it! I support continuing the swim program for every class once a week all year. We loved it, they learned and became safe in a water full area.

Why would the school turn their backs to $80,000 gift? Kids need to learn to swim - what’s the problem? No excuse.

I can't put in words how important this program was for my two girls when they went through NES. Please keep swim lessons as they always were for our current and future NES kiddos.

This is such an important program for lots of reasons--learning safety, new skills, cooperation, having fun.
