Both my daughter and son had the great good fortune to land in Mr. Carnine’s class for history/English in 6th grade. We found him to be an extraordinary, dedicated teacher, who shares his passion for history with his students and was the first to ignite my children’s own interest in the subject. They came home most days talking about all the things they had learned in his class. Unlike some teachers who do little more than read from textbooks, Mr. Carnine actively taught, delivering lectures that excited the students, challenging them to think and articulate their own ideas and understanding of the world. He assigned the students unusual, thought-provoking projects -- and then spent scores of hours carefully grading and critiquing each and every one in his beautiful handwriting. My husband and I would marvel at this level of commitment and feel grateful that Revere had such a gifted teacher, and even more grateful that our children ended up in his class. His removal from the classroom is a terrible loss for the school and for all of his students, past, present, and future.

I have two boys at Paul Revere. The older one was taught by Mr. Carnine last year; the younger one is in his English and History class this year. Mr. Carnine is an outstanding and dedicated teacher. I recently had the opportunity to accompany my son during his school day. There was a time when my son would not volunteer to answer questions in class, but in Mr. Carnine's class, my son was standing at the front of the room confidently answering two dozen questions on Roman Geography. I was thrilled by how much he has grown as a student and I want to thank Mr. Carnine for this. Mr. Carnine allows students to have lunch in his classroom, providing a welcoming environment to the students. My son wanted to eat in Mr. Carnine's room that day, so I went to get my lunch, thinking there would only be a few kids in the room. When I returned, I was surprised to see the room was filled to capacity. The kids all seemed very happy and they were of ALL races and grades. Mr. Carnine realized there was no place for me to sit. He insisted I take HIS chair and he went to find another chair for himself. I am deeply saddened at how this accusation must be making him feel. I am relieved to hear that students from the eighth grade class are saying that these accusations are false.

When a teacher teaches history honestly with is students he should be applauded. Honest, accurate knowledge about the ills of our past is how we forge our way towards a better future. Mr. Carnine is a respected teacher because of his methodology and Paul Revere is a better school because of him. He deserves the support of the school and all of the families.

I was there (I'm in the class) and I just want to clarify a few things.
As for the stereotyping...
Mr. Carnine said that stereotypes were wrong, but sadly they are still in our world today. He was discussing these stereotypes with us in order to help us understand history and how different races were treated and sometimes still are. He said that SOME PEOPLE think that black people are not smart and only good at sports, and that Jewish people are known for being very wealthy. He taught us that these stereotypes are wrong and should not be used, but there are still many people in America who believe these stereotypes.
About the N-lover rumor...
Mr. Carnine discussed how many people didn't not like Lincoln, because they claimed he was an n-lover. He did not even use the word; he spelt it out and said "excuse my language, I really do not like using this word, but this is how harshly the African American people were treated". Mr. Carnine also said he was completely against the word, but he was trying to teach us about the harshness of slavery before the civil war. It was important to learn about how harsh it really was in order to understand this history better. He did not want to "sugar coat" it to us, like many other teachers tend to do.
Finally, about the Ferguson discussion...
Mr. Carnine said that the man was a "t--g", but he absolutely did NOT deserve to be harassed like he was. He also mentioned that it was not fair to have an all-white police squad on the job, because there was bound to be racism, even though the amount of racist people has noticeably decreased and our society has overall evened out.
Mr. Carnine's class is my favorite class. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had, and I know it is the same for many others. This is not fair to his students that love him and appreciate him so incredibly much. He is an amazing teacher, by far one of the best at Paul Revere, and I'm positive that everyone in my history class would agree. He doe

I have had the distinct pleasure and luck of having Mr Carnine teach three of my children over the course of 10 years. He was an amazing teacher who gave my children an understanding of culture, religion and race. He was NEVER anything but appropriate in the classroom. He was one of the most inspiring and influential teachers my children and their friends have had. He provided an amazing education with a great deal of respect for the students and the religions/cultures about which he taught. Let's put things back in perspective and in context. By manipulating context and quotaton, I could condemn anyone. For instance, "this person always tells the truth except when it serves their purposes to lie". Takes on a different meaning when it stops at "this person always tells the truth". I fully trust and believe in me Carnine. It would be an injustice to him and a tragedy for future students to lose him at Paul Revere.

I am currently in mr. Carnines class for 8th grade history and I look forward to his class at the end of the day. I know that the girl who accused mr. Carnine of being rasist had just transferred into his class and did not understand his style of teaching and his humor. Her accusations were also out of context. I doubt that any teacher who would replace him would be anywhere near as good of a teacher as he is.

Hi all: Priya Advani, a former student of Mr. Carnine's, is organizing a rally for 7:15 tomorrow (Monday) morning on the west side of Allenford across from the school. She has done a great job setting up a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SupportMrCarnine. Please go to it and "like" it so that the word spreads. All students and parents are encouraged to come to school early to attend the rally. We will try to send out a template to print posters, or bring your own. The goals should probably be: 1. demonstrate community support for Mr. Carnine, 2. get the attention of LAUSD, 3. get people to sign this petition, 4. get the attention of the press to reverse the smears against Mr. Carnine. Anyone else in? Any other ideas?

I was a student in Mr. Carnine's class as a sixth grader in 2006-07. Steven Carnine was one of the best teachers that I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. His door was always open at lunch and nutrition, and his classroom served as a safe haven for many students. My two younger brothers also had Mr. Carnine in sixth grade. I firmly believe that he would not make such insensitive remarks. 27 years teaching at an institution like Paul Revere goes to show just how great of an instructor and mentor that Mr. Carnine is to his students.

I was in Mr. Carnine’s class last year for 6th grade. I believe that Mr. Carnine is innocent. Mr. Carnine is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Every day in his class was entertaining and enlightening. Mr. Carnine is an extremely pleasant teacher. Mr. Carnine is a person who would make jokes in class and everyone would laugh, but he would never say anything racist.
