The Park does not exist for the aid and comfort of Eastside commuters. If more parking is needed in Bellevue or Issaquah, then land in their cities should be used. Luther Burbank Park is the jewel of our community and must not be despoiled.

Fellow Islanders. as Deputy Mayor, I want to assure you that no one is trying to hide anything here or rush this through. We are in the initial stages of a review process that will include significant opportunity for public input. We have been telling the public for several weeks now that this project was going to be studied. At this point, that is what we and Sound Transit are doing - studying it to determine feasibility, environmental impacts and traffic mitigation options. As part of those studies, we are gathering public input as ultimately this will only go forward if the public supports it.
Second, the property in question is not part of Luther Burbank Park and never has been. It was acquired from the School District as part of the purchase of the old elementary school that ultimately became our Community Center. The property line that divides this former School District property from the Park property is just south of the Pea Patch (which will not be impacted should this project go forward). I know it is referred to in the Luther Burbank Park Master Plan but the fact of the matter is that it is not part of the Park; the reference in the Master Plan was an error at the time. In fact, what is really there is fill excavated in 2004 when we built the Community Center that we piled up in order to save the cost of trucking it off Island. I know that because I was the main proponent on the Council for doing so. Ironically, the neighbors at the time strongly objected to placing the fill there.
Third, no one is talking about adding 450 spaces. The proposal is for about 200 new spaces. If this is built, the spaces will be available for everyone, including non-Islanders for about 3 years, after which they will only be open to Islanders. Given the importance that Sound Transit's light rail will ultimately have for Mercer Island, this temporary availability to non-Islanders may be viewed as a small price to pay for dedicated Islander parking

Why turn a beautiful green space into a concrete structure to accomodate parked cars that are mostly off-island? The traffic alone would disrupt the parking lot flow, and the parking structure would be an eyesore. Why create traffic in a location where there are 2 pre-schools with parents needing to drop off/pick up? Why not expand the existing Park and Ride that is around the corner?? Kite Hill is a beautiful spot that children love to run up and roll down. The views from the top are incredible. I could understand using that space to expand the existing community center, but not for parking. So you will lose the opportunity to use that space for other, much better reasons down the road. Finally, this grassy area leads to the P-Patch which is a beloved space for many community residents to grow produce. Having a parking garage next to a P-Patch (assuming you are able to save it) would look and feel awful. Please keep Kite Hill green!

If they need the space they need to epand the current structure (like we originally requested when built) not take away our parks.

Luther Burbank park is the most beautiful park on mercer island, and arguably one of the most scenic locations on the esst side. Crrating a park and ride on or adjacent to this property is unconscionable.
