Dear Sir, I respectfully ask that you do more research on the subject of the Civil War before you remove what you consider to be an "offensive" stained glass window in our beautiful church. Your "offense" sir, is based on a revisionist view of the war. Consider this: According to census records (facts) of that period, LESS than 5% of white southerners owned slaves. The other near 95% of the southern populace did not fight in the war between the states so that the less than 5% could keep their slaves. That makes no sense. The truth is that they fought due to 72 years of increasingly oppressive tariffs (close to 80% of the country's total take of taxes) imposed on them by the north. Every southerner paid those unfair taxes and they increasingly grew to resent it. President Lincoln used those taxes to build infrastructure in the north, particularly to the benefit of his RR executive buddies and himself. He sold a personal piece of his property in Iowa for the first RR station. Look up the history of the UP RR and President Lincoln. The south was Lincoln's cash cow and he didn't want to lose it. Lincoln wanted to control the south but couldn't find support for a war when succession was threatened. Why should the north care that the south was suffering from their oppressive tariffs? It was making them fat and happy. They liked how things were going for them, until Lincoln, a brilliant tactician, garnered support for the war by basing it on the issue of slavery. Now slavery existed in the north and south. Of the percentage of slavery in both, there were more free people of color in the south. (Census records) Less than 5% of total whites in the south owned slaves. Of the free peole of color in the south, 28% of them owned slaves, so statistics show that when blacks owned slaves they did so in greater percentages. Also consider that before the invasion, Confederate Generals who owned slaves freed them. Union Generals kept their slaves throughout the war and after. Only so

These stained glass windows are memorials to the brave men who fought for the South and are now considered U. S. soldiers.

I am an Episcopalian, and am very disturbed that prominent historical members of our church are now being attacked. For over 50 years I have been a member of Christ Church Cathedral in New Orleans where in my youth served as an acolyte. Every time I walk back from the altar after receiving the sacrament, I walk over the area in which Bishop Leonidas Polk is entombed. Query, since this great bishop of the Church was also a Confederate General in the War Between the States, will the Church also consider removing his remains?

Where is wisdom in destroying history for the sake of pleasing one generation over another? What will you do when they deem the cross offensive or teachings of Jesus? Will you allow the church destroyed?
