We do not have an economic value for the amount our trees are doing to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures, prolonged droughts and air pollution. So often the only people who benefit are land developers for the sake of convenience and increased profits while tax payers and society bear the cost. Ignorance can no longer be an excuse, please let us protect our irreplaceable asset now.

Save the trees! And plant more fruit strees in the developing suburbs to line the street.

Urban forests form a natural filter for air pollution, and are a natural line of defense against climate change. Spending time near trees improves physical and mental health by increasing energy levels and speed of recovery, while decreasing blood pressure and stress. Trees properly placed around buildings can reduce air conditioning needs by 30% and save energy used for heating by 20–50%. Trees provide habitat, food and protection to plants and animals, increasing urban biodiversity...protecting our urban forest today is essential for future generations!

The proposed amendments are costly, will delay property development, add another layer of experts to be compensated before anything can be done, and rely heavily on the discretion of the Council. Much more to the point:
1. Levy a municipal tax on rezoning- say one third of the retail value of the proposed development - why should huge rezoning windfalls accrue solely to the developer and property owner, and all expenditure accrue to the luxury features of the new residents accommodation, and nothing to the municipality which provides all the infrastructure and has engendered the salubrious surroundings?
2. Don't rezone big residential stands for two stories and an 80% footprint (which often means only the street trees are preserved and a few palm trees are brought in). Rather 4 stories on 40% footprint - or 5 on 32% - the developer will then want to preserve big trees, to maximize the value of the garden - no tree audit required.
3. Make all paved areas at least 50% porous paving, and add a levy on the rates for every sq m of non-porous paving.

The trees give Johannesburg her charm. Without them it will no longer be home. Though an increase in density is necessary, it should be managed properly and in such a way that bylaws are upheld and the environment considered.

The high temperatures brought upon by climate change and higher CO2 emissions can be effectively fended off by protecting our mature trees in Johannesburg, including those lying on private property. We ask that s by-law be passed to protect those mature trees.

Our trees are also under severe threat from shothole-borer beetle. CoJ, we urgently need a coordinated, well-publicized plan to save the trees.

I concur with this petition on all points however would like to suggest that we reconsider even the invasive species. For instance Eucalyotus trees suck up the water and at times removal thereof may cause a significant rise in the water table which may affect the many developments that have arisen in that area with rising damp.
It is important to have trees for social reasons like happiness, harmony and good health too. It is proven that trees are particularly important for the well being of humans. They stuck up the carbon emissions and keep areas cooler. The increase in trees being felled will lead to increasing heat in urban areas.
Pleas protect our trees.
