This lacrosse program was heading in the right direction. Cutting it ruins a program that was gradually growing. I understand that COVID hurt with funding; however, I believe that cutting this program only adds to the pain that has already been done. Being a college lacrosse player at another school, I do not want to see more young athletes face the burden of having lacrosse stripped away.

As a member of the upstate New York lacrosse community I agree with those presenting this petition to maintain the men’s and women’s lacrosse programs at Houghton College. Throughout my coaching career I have had the pleasure of interacting with multiple Houghton Lacrosse alumni, both male and female, as well as multiple men’s lacrosse recruits. These programs have undeniably not only improved the public perspective of the university by their outgoing and charitable nature, but have been major influencers for the college that without the Lacrosse program would not exist. The recruits that have been sought out and brought to your campus, in my experience, have been extraordinary young men who have nothing but bright futures ahead of them. Athletic success apart, which will come and go with all programs within the landscape of Division III athletics, by dissolving the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Lacrosse programs this college will be losing a large number of incredible student-athletes and leaders that represent your college’s community. I hope the board reconsiders their decision for the future of these student-athletes and this institution.

This program and Coach Lundeen changed my life for the better. The program has grown exponentially since the first season. The reasoning behind its cancellation is a slap in the face to all those who have loved and helped the program grow.

Sports teams are some of the few groups that can function in community during COVID19 and have a presence for the school. If the team is willing then approach them and talk about some solutions for budgeting and responsibilities.
