Any agency serving 50 states and touts that it is profitable, exists primarily to make money by "cherry picking" their clientele. Taxpayers and government have a responsibility to its medically needy citizens.

Saw some of this in action when I delivered Meals on Wheels. They do a wonderful job and need to continue. Any for profit agency will not be as good. Let locals take care of locals.

My parents lived in Southern Shores & both were in Dare counties hospice care, for which we could not do without. They were there when no one else would help a daughter with her dying parents. Please, please find another way to save such an incredibly important & necessary service.

I am a new resident of only 6 years here in Manteo. I am a retired LPN and have seen first hand the impact on the community to have such a wonderful agency that in the end of life stages, the importance of this kind of care given and received. It takes a special kind of nurse that can endure the pain of the family and patient that cares and watches their love one fade away and they stand helpless. Some of these same people may have paid taxes for many years, or have been volunteers and risked their own lives serving the community. There is no amount of money that can replace this agency in the new community of which we chose to be our home. The support that the family and patient need is essential to seeing their loved one die with the best care possible and not be alone during these times. I plead with those behind this decision to sell off this gift of humanity the residents including myself would be a tragic mistake. Ridding such agencies will only make this area a tourist vacationers place to come and push residents out of the place they may have called home for years. Its already difficult with the cost of living here, most having to commute for decent paying to Va. Beach and other areas. We moved here from Ohio and the cost of living here is easy 30% higher and come winter its a ghost town almost. We live on social security and lucky a retirement and we pay for Flood, Hurricane and Home Ins. Property Tax etc. That is over $7,000 a year alone. Why did we choose to do this? Because we believe this is a place that everyone cares about one another and when my time or my husbands time comes to our end of life, I pray that Hospice will be there to support both of us. I want both of us to die with dignity and have those nurse angles support both of us when we are in our most desperate moments. I have only one request and that is you follow a few of these heroic nurses on a few home visits. Speak to the family of how greatful they are to have that nurse and agency.

Keep Home Health & Hospice in the County. The board better start listening to its residents instead of dollar signs.

Greetings Board of Commissioners, Last year my mother died. Getting adequate care for her at the end of her life was challenging. Dare Home Health and Hospice came to the rescue. The nurses and physical therapists that attended to my mother were phenomenal. I can’t say enough good things about Micah, Amanda, and the others. To my surprise, the level of care my mother received from Dare Home Health was better than what she received in the hospital. Her caregivers were kind, patient, compassionate, and highly competent. My concern about the potential sale of Dare Home Health and Hospice to a company that has been previously under investigation is that the citizens of Dare County won’t get the care they need, and employees of Dare Home Health and Hospice along with residents will be at the receiving end of employee negligence by the corporation and that patients and people at the end of their lives will suffer additionally and unnecessarily due a lack of appropriate and excellent patient care practices if sold to the highest bidder. I am additionally concerned that due diligence and total transparency have not been at the forefront of the conversations concerning the sale of Dare Home Health and Hospice. The people of Dare County deserve the best possible care and in the words of my mother who was born and raised in Manteo and lived the vast majority of her life here, “ money isn’t everything.” Thank you, Michelle Lewis

Do not sell the Dare Home Health and Hospice. Let's save it and keep it local. We need to care for our residence.

My friend works for a hospice house in another state that is owned privately. She complains all the time about the company is not for the best interest of the people there. All about money. Money made on people dying, really......
