As a parent, I am amazed to see how much knowledge and responsibility my daughter has shown in taking care of these animals. She has learned how to properly care for them, feed them, clean up after them, give them medicine when they are sick and learn all about their anatomy & science. I love that this program could offer this to her and that it means so much to her.

What a wonderful program, teaching students how to care for a living being, leadership and entrepreneurship. It would be a huge load to the program.

Students having real involvement in decisions is a hallmark of a Montessori education, especially at the secondary level. It is developmentally appropriate for them to be involved in major decisions about changes to their program.
Please include the students in decision making about their school and program. Major decisions and changes need their input.

It really saddens me to see this awful thing happening. Not only to the kids but the animals as well. The goats and chickens have been raised by those kids from day one, they’ve named each and every one of them and watched them grow and bloom. To just rip away something that means so much to them is so unfair. A healthy vaccinated goat and chicken is the very last thing that will get you sick, there are very little zoonotic diseases out there. Someone needs to do some more research on sanitation.

Many schools are just starting to understand the value of hands on education and are adding farm programs to their curriculums. I refer you to Odyssey Charter for example. Ending your program, especially abruptly without giving children any opportunity to say goodbye is both shortsighted and mercenary.

The chickens and goats have become such an important focal point in our Montessori community. My students in Children’s House inquire about them daily and they (the chickens and goats) provide them with opportunities to practice empathy and care for another living thing.

As an elementary teacher myself, I can tell you that this will negatively impact the children of this school greatly! These children are learning to care for others, collaborate, and take responsibility as well as leadership skills. In addition to this, these children are undergoing a lot of changes. It is important to keep as much normalcy and structure as possible during these times! Causing more unnecessary changes and disruption will hinder these student learning. This is such a fun program for these students and it would be heartbreaking to have it taken away from them!

I don’t think the board thought this one through. The animals aren’t just a part of the HMS their part of the HMS family, what separates HMS from other Montessori schools. You can’t just get ride of FAMILY with out a FIGHT!!!

The animals enhance the Montessori learning. They are a friend to all the kids and Faith does an excellent job of teaching the kids. I think with everything going on it’s important to teach them to care for life, and for the kids to feel like they are making a difference. The goats and chickens NEED the kids just as much as the kids NEED the animals. It’s a beautiful relationship that is unique to HMS. The kids will be wearing a mask anyways so the animals will be safe.

I can’t believe that after two years of having the animals, they’re just going away. I don’t understand how they’re a danger to little kids at all. A lot of the time it’s just the Middle Schoolers around the chicken coop. Also, the animals would need to get the Coronavirus from a human. It’s not like the animals socialize with anyone outside of school grounds.
