I remember when this program was started and the students have loved taking care of the animals. If they must go due to cost, I understand. But it would be very helpful to video them and give some understandable explanation for them having to go and tell where they are going so the students can all understand and approve. The video can be seen at anytime if desired as well it might ease the separation.

As an alum, some of my most significant memories from my 13 years at HMS, include the school/class animals that I had the opportunity to interact with throughout my time as a student. The inclusion of animals on campus as a tool of learning is so very crucial to fulfilling the true Montessori experience, as well as teaching responsibility and care. The removal of these animals would be to disregard a pivotal part of what allows students, of all backgrounds, to learn and benefit from the full Montessori education as intended.

The animals are one of the most special things about this school. I absolutely love the goats and chickens, I don’t hang around them that much, but I still adore these little guys. Without them, the school wouldn’t be the same.

My daughter, in Children's House, has been teaching me about chickens on our daily walks past a house with chickens in the backyard. When I ask, "Wow! Where did you learn all of that!?" She tells me that the big kids at school taught her. She's also been asking about the goats and chickens and how they are doing while kids and teachers aren't at school. They're so important and unique to the HMS community!
