Nordic skiing is a huge part of some peoples lives (including mine) and if you take away funding, it would be like not funding football or another major varsity sport. Please don't do this

This makes me sick. I've been a ski racer for 11 years, NCAA DI skier for four years, NCAA DI ski coach for one year. This cut is despicable and must be remedied. Just because a sport doesn't make the college money like a basketball program, doesn't mean it's the right decision to cut it. The accountants who make these types of decisions are the coldest souls on earth, who cannot understand or have not taken the time to see and appreciate the love, effort, pain, and day-in-day-out devotion that goes into a sport like Nordic skiing, a sport which routinely scores both of the top two spots in academic performance at schools as well (if men's and women's teams are counted separately). Thus at many institutions, the sport produces graduates who contribute high per-capita alumni donations dollars. Nordic skiers work the entire year round in order to be able to be competitive in their events, something which cannot be said for most other sports. If the decision were about accrued effort alone, Nordic skiing would be the number-one safest sport from cuts in the entire arena of athletics. Gustavus Athletics have said that the decision wasn't about money, but in mentioning "the future", they have just downright contradicted themselves. Here's to hoping this ugly and thick-skulled decision will be overturned by warmer-hearted individuals with an understanding of the value of the sport.

Nordic is a life changing sport. How about they cut down, a little bit of funding for every other sport, in order to have enough to go around.

Many prospective Gustavus students cite the Nordic Skiing program as a large incentive for attending the school. These prospective students as well as the existing skiers are often extremely capable and high achieving students. There is no discernible logic behind this cut, and you are alienating many many future and past Gusties by following through with this type of decision - making.

My daughter is a senior at Gustavus. She is not involved in Nordic skiing, but is at this college to explore the many activities it has to offer. Please don't take away this opportunity for these students who chose to attend Gustavus for the education and the Nordic opportunity.

Please reconsider the decision to remove the varsity status of Nordic skiing from the Gustavus athletic program. My ten year experience with the Grand Rapids mn ski program tells me that nordic skiing attracts the very best students. The nordic skiers were motivated, goal oriented and hard working. These traits were why members of the nordic team, as a whole, were always the top academically performing students in the school. The large majority of High School nordic skiers go on to complete a four year or more college education. I would think that this is the type of student Gustavus would want to attract.

Please reconsider this decision to effectively eliminate the opportunities for Nordic skiers at Gustavus to compete. Here in Grand Rapids, we have hosted college races at Mount Itasca. It is inspiring to see high school skiers continue on a lifelong healthfu activity.
