It would be interesting to know how many of the Nordic Ski Team are on scholarships....my guess many fewer than most sports teams. Administration may want to look at the financial support the parents and Nordic team alums give .....money may not be the stated reason but I'm sure it's part of the decision.

This is very short sighted; once something is removed from competition; unlikely that it will ever return. Lifelong sports that promote health should be a priority in our world. Please reconsider this ill advised decision.

I regrettably did not ski while attending GAC, but did so from 3rd grade through high school. I recently picked up where I left off and began skiing again. I'm not sure how often this happens with other sports. Some people I know are permanently injured from football, hockey, or other more popular college athletics. I've yet to meet someone in that position from Nordic skiing. It's not uncommon to see folks in their 70s out skiing. It is truly a life-long activity. If GAC as an institution is setting up young people for life-long learning, why not do the same for physical conditioning? And what about supporting Scandinavian heritage... and diversity... and the many other things that are part of Gustavus' “marketing”, er..., “core values” of the “community”, or whatever you are calling them. Not everything that matters makes money, so use what makes money to support what matters. I think it was a mistake to abandon the Peace Studies program while I was attending college, and I think abandoning the Nordic Ski program would be one also. -Kevin Malmquist '01

my daughters were involved in nordic skiing from 7th grade thru college and still continue to ski four years later and always will. It is a life time sport and one of the most challenging sports. The students involved in this sport are focused, ambitious and have a healthy work attitude. Please do not take this away from them....

I would like to hear from the Gustavus A.D. The rational why Nordic was dropped. Not just an announcement.

Skiing is a wonderful sport and makes Minnesota, Minnesotans, and Minnesota schools unique. Giving that up is a shame and an unnecessary action that will not only damage the reputation of the school, but more importantly will also hurt the opportunities available to students.

My daughter is a stellar student, (4.0 in hs sports and academic teams) went to her first Junior Nationals and wants to ski in college. In college she wants to continue to train and race in college and feels it helps her focus and stay healthy. As was said these will be your stellar college students and the school and ski community benefit far exceeds what you put in. Keep the dream for our HS students and keep your nordic program.

As an alumnus of Gustavus I am very sad to see this sport cut. I had many friends that loved being a part of this organization and it greatly increased their college experience.

College athletics, especially the individual sports, are an important part of growing into well rounded, functional adults. They are a win- win investment for both students and colleges.
