terrible news and very disrespectful for the athletes who signed on here with that offering.

I'm a coach. I know many kids who want to ski for a program that is smaller, where they will find a place, relationships, growh and success--not necessarily on outcome but int he effort. That means they need dedication and attention. It is truly hard to find programs that aren't either too elitist or too informal. Give dreams a chance.

In my four years at Gustavus, I cannot say that any other team represented the spirit of Gustavus any better than the Nordic team. This team deserves far more respect than it has received. As an alumnus I am very disappointed in the administration of Gustavus in this matter. The Nordic team should reinstated. Period.

I am the father of a high school sophomore who is currently in the college search process. My son is a soccer player, a track and field athlete, and a Nordic skier. He is also very good student, whose self-discipline and determination owe a debt of gratitude to his participation in athletics. In particular, the tightly knit community of Nordic skiing has provided him friendly, healthy competition within his team and with other teams as well. Through this sport, he has learned to challenge himself, and to maximize his own performance in a healthy manner. Upon graduation, he plans to continue his Nordic skiing if possible. One factor in his choice of schools is the presence of Nordic skiing. In our local school system, we are experiencing a major budget crunch. The future of several programs, including interscholastic activities, is in doubt. We recognize that these are realities, and sometimes hard decisions need to be made. However, it does seem odd, and discouraging, that Gustavus Adolphus, the proud alma mater of several of my friends and associates, would make a decision to cut a healthy Nordic ski program if that decision is not driven by financial concerns. I do not know if Adolphus Gustavus is currently on my son's list of prospective colleges, or whether it would end up on his list eventually. However, I am relatively sure that it would disappear from his list in light of the school's removal of its NCAA Nordic Ski Team.

My nephew was a member if the ski team a few years back. He was a representation of the kind of scholar athlete that would make any parent proud. His participation was supported by his family and friends. Do you think I would have heard of your comets down here in NC if not for him? Please reconsider! Mary Decker

Cutting the team strikes me as short-sighted, especially in light of the fact that the team has offered to fund itself.

Why not let next years Juniors and Seniors finish out their years; do not have Nordic Skiing for those freshmen coming in during 2014. My granddaughter is devastated.
Keep this team going!
