As someone who has an Masters Degree in Education I understand how invaluable the arts are to creating well-rounded citizens. As a mother of a Greensburg Salem MS student I know first-hand how exposure to a musical instrument, participation in band has increased my son's self-confidence and improved his critical thinking skills. As a community looking to raise productive citizens, I believe maintaining a strong arts program is an essential tool to accomplishing that goal. We create better students, citizens and human beings via music and art education.

My daughter just started band this year and she LOVES it. She does very well on the sax and we are purchasing it. To take this program away is not fair and kids need more focus on things to enrich their lives. If there were more positive programs available then the need for the SECURITY would not be an issue!

Education is more than academics. Music makes well rounded students. Give kids an outlet. Band forms bonds and support systems. Your band students are less likely to get into trouble or turn to drugs. You will be compounding other problems by removing the music program.

The research does not lie regarding the positive influences that playing an instrument has on child development. It is extremely important that our children have an opportunity to be involved in the band program from the grade school level to the high school level. School board members, please vote to approve the budget to hire a full-time elementary band instructor.

The band is a big part for any school! How can you have a football game without a halftime show. They play at the pep rallies and help to get the school in the spirit. Also how can you have a parade with no band. The band is a very important part of any school and should not be pushed aside. The younger kids need to have the opportunity to explore the music side of their lives!

I participated in all of the elementary, junior high, and high school bands and their activities when I attended Greensburg Salem schools. As I look back on all of it now, those activities were tremendous influences on me and good influences in shaping who I ultimately became as an adult. It is troubling to me that we are even considering this elimination. I sincerely hope we can save it so that my son can have the same opportunities and experiences through music that I did while attending Greensburg Salem schools.

The decision to dissolve the elementary band portion of the music program will have devastating outcomes for the students being served by the Greensburg Salem School District and the Greensburg Salem School District itself.
With the oldest known musical instruments appearing in the archeological record from 40,000 years ago… Playing instruments, singing, dancing, and people coming together to create and listen to music has been an integral part of our society. Learning to play an instrument and to be part of band can expedite the development of language and math skills, train students to focus their attention for sustained periods, help students acquire a sense of empathy for others, and so much more. There is a wealth of research that shows music education has the ability to help children reach their full intellectual, social, and creative potential. In fact, musically trained individuals have stronger neural connections, more grey matter, better information processing, better memory and attention, better motor coordination, and higher IQs than those individuals who are not musically trained.
If the elementary band portion of the music program is dissolved, then students will be at a disadvantage physiologically, academically, socially, and musically from their peers in competing school districts who have access to music lessons at the elementary level. In addition to experiencing potential academic decline in the district as a whole, it is likely that students and their families may choose to migrate to competing districts with similar tax rates that offer music lessons and band as part of the school’s curriculum.
