The Giant Steps community is one of a kind. It has been proven we as staff and parents will come together to support and advocate for our children because they too deserve to have equal right to their education. As parents fight the endless battles of placement for their children and as staff we fight endlessly to be heard and appreciated in the work place yet the board makes all the decision making for us which leaves us discouraged. The staff who work hard on a daily basis; on it’s good or bad days to come provide students with outstanding programs in their education. Students thrive at Giant Steps. There’s no other placement for them. Why was there no open discussion with parents and staff regarding this decision? No student nor parent had a say to their education. No staff had a say to how they will provide from their own families due to the loss of employment. So who thought it was a great idea to close the school leaving students and families high and dry of reasons that remain unknown? Who decided it was a great idea to furlough the IAs in March because they can’t provide nor participate in their students education through distance learning? That wasn’t even a discussion that was presented to the IAs. The IAs are the most valuable position towards the students program since they are able to build a strong educational connection and advocate for their students yet the IAs are overlooked and unappreciated for all their dedicated work. Who thought is was a great idea to stop distance learning during a worldwide pandemic? In times where we are supposed to stand by one another and support each other the most. Who thought it was a great idea to close the school leaving staff with major uncertainty in the days to come? Staff who made a living off Giant Steps to support their families at home with children of their own. What are the days to come going to look like? How come there are certain questions unanswered? Why does it take forever to receive minutes and bylaws

If this were to happen it would be life changing to all these students. This school has saved their lives with competent, caring, compassionate staff and a place they feel safe. Not all these students have had this experience prior to their enrollment. Some of these students were abused, endured incompetent educators, etc. Closing this sacred ground to these students would put all of them back into a world of education that doesn’t care or understand them. After over 20 yrs being a sacred ground to students who have been blessed to have this education experience it should not give up on the next decades of students. #dontgiveuponthem.

My nephew, Erik Vieux, attends Giant Steps. The school has been a blessing for him and his family. I sincerely hope that the BOD will reconsider closing this amazing school.
