What good is theory without a learning environment to practice it in?

This is the only course at Carleton that introduces exactly the type of work I, along with many other students, belong to. We need it to stay, FILM2801 will be my inspiration.

Keeping this class will depict whether or not I continue my studies here. I want to learn as much hands on production skills as I can! My love for film stems from my hopes in creating documentaries in the future. You must keep this class so that students may indulge in all areas of film!

Ending a course that promotes the application of what the students are learning is missing the point of furthering one's education at a university. Application is one of the main components to learning, and some find it easier to learn/understand by applying themselves.

Documentaries and short films is one of Canada's best asset at can and tiff . This course is ecancel to film making, so may e they should cancel this category in all award ceremonies. Eg. Oscars

documentary has the power to provoke, challenge, and explore in a way fiction-narrative can not. Enabling students the hands-on experience of crafting a short non-fiction narrative within a classroom setting- allows students the ability to get the criticism, context, and confidence necessary to tell visually compelling stories. It provides space to explore the tools and make mistakes. Attempting to get this experience in-industry can be daunting (and stacked against you if you are female, or a person of colour.) Documentary is an artform and incredibly different than journalism. Not letting students a chance to get practical experience crafting this together will be a serious disadvantage to anyone trying to get a better understanding of this creative medium. It would be a mistake to shut a course like this down.

I am first year film student and I feel the course is so theoretical. I am looking forward for more practical studies and want to study this course

I love theory, but I struggled for years working as a PA, wanting to make movies and collaborate with students/friends at school..but CU has never had a production component. Have at least one course, come on!

Definitely one of the best courses I've taken so far at Carleton and also the most useful. It not only provides students with hands-on experience but also delves into documentaries in a more meaningful and insightful way than the average course. Should be a full year course and open to students who want to pursue it in the future!

Fantastic course, also should be offered as a FULL YEAR course, not separated into two semesters.
