The elderly were once youths and deserve to have a place where they can access to meet and socialise. Changing the venue will bring unhappiness and loneliness to many.

it would be absolutely criminal to close this centre. There are so many elderly, local residents that use this centre. This may be their only interaction with other people and I know how much they look forward to going. Remember, if it were your mum or dad's only contact with the outside world, how would you feel.SO SAD. It would be a shame for the brownies etc, but they would find somewhere else to go and in the main, be able to get there. But the elderly, in particular, wouldn't.

Surely closing down a well used (and increasingly rare) community resource isn't a good idea. It doesn't need to make money (I hope most people would accept that providing for the elderly is a duty of a civilised society and are willing to contribute to that) but if it is really costing too much, could the space not be better utilised (hiring out etc) to help meet that cost?

As a Wells resident and as I near retirement age, I feel cheated by this council that this much-appreciated community resource will be taken away from me.

People from outside the Wells estate also use this centre due to a lack of local facilities. Where are all these people & residents supposed to go

Keep it open!!! So many children around that area I cxnt believe this is even being considered, and also to replace it with something that is not suitable for an area that is full of young families!!

I feel this centre should be kept open as it is a great asset for the community on the Wells both young and old. It helps the keep the elderly stimulated when they are able to meet locally and to be in touch with their close neibours.

If you believe that there are plenty more areas where the council can save money can you suggest some sensible ones? probably not.
Do any of the people signing this petition actually know that the centre is not closing?
The residents have been given the opportunity to take the centre over but there are quite a few Labour supporters who want to stir matters up by mis-quoting what is happening and don't even know what is going on.
Mr. Pasand does not even want to know about the Wells and makes promises that he will never be able to keep!
If the people who are signing this petition actually knew the truth and not the spin that is being circulated then they would not bother - savings have to be made as there have been major cutbacks in funding to the council - where do people expect all this money to come from?
The last Labour government almost bankrupted the Country!!
Somebody and unfortunately it is all of us that are having to cut back in our own spending as well - look at the world and see what is going on - be thankful that you live in a prosperous country and stop worrying about something that will affect 8 - yes 8 older residents from the Wells who are still able to go to the longmead centre for their meetings and lunch.
Did you know that the Wells supports 38 residents from outside our Borough who are using the centre and don't pay anything to the Council YET EACH ONE of these is costing YOU and ME £560 a year!!!
The centre is staying open as a community centre unless there is a management group set up to run it - do something useful and set up this committee to run the centre and you will find out what and how much it costs to run the building.
